Norton anti-virus has been telling me for a couple of weeks now that it is about to expire, and that i should renew for another 12 months. i decided i would just renew for now, since this should be quick and easy. i have never had any real problems with either Norton anti-virus or virus infections, being slightly paranoid probably helps here ;) then Norton's on-line renewal service rejected my details twice in a row, the first time i have ever had my details rejected anywhere :| so having reached my "i don't want to know anymore" limit what alternate anti-virus programs would people recommend? i have heard good things about grisoft's AVG but i have never used it myself. zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

Or your renewal details? If the former, it might be an issue with their payment processing system. Of course as a customer, you expect things to work :-)

I like AVG[^]. It's free, and it works just fine, I haven't had any problems with it. Cheers, Fredrik

Norton Antivirus is one of the best solutions in the Antivirus software , but it slows down the machine too much. So if you want high performance and not bad virus detection i'd suggest you to use Kaspersky Antivirus Personal 5 or even better, EsetNod32. I hate the new licensing business model that McAfee and Symantec have taken with their programs. I much prefer the old days when you bought a license for the software that you could use as long as you want, with updates for the virus definitions forever. Now, you have to re-buy the program every year. I hate having to pay $50-70 for this stuff, with very little changes -- just virus definition updates. Seems like a complete rip-off since these companies are probably the ones creating the viruses in the first place. :) Regards, Brigg Thorp Senior Software Engineer Timex Corporation

I disagree in that case: the antivirus companies spend more and more money for updating their virus definitions. So, is it not fair to pay them for it? I think so. Also you do not buy the program every year, you pay the definitions support for another year. In Symantec's case it's only about 35 Euros. I for my part never had any virus nowadays and am pretty happy with NAV :-) Regards Mathias

i actually don't know. my reading of the error message was that my credit card details had been rejected. it said to re-try or wait 24 hours and then have another go *rolls eyes* they are a big company, i expected this to just work. i have entered customer mode ;) if you wont accept my money i will go and find someone who will :) zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

I'm happier with the AVG free version (that I use at home) than I am with Norton that they installed on my machine at the office. For a licensed version of AVG, the fee is very reasonable.

We just moved to NOD32 here at work. We used to use McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, but the licensing fees for 100+ users just went up 50% for this next year. Our IT guys decided to look at other alternatives. I actually like the NOD software because it also looks at Spyware and Trojans when you browse. It really offers very good protection and does not eat much resources.
