Hi everyone, I'm a completely inexperienced guy working from home (New Zealander, and no sheep jokes please). I'm not really a programmer; I sort of got pushed into it a couple of years ago. My boss said 'You're it, and we need this (a program to do whatever)' and threw a copy of c# at me. I like beer. I like programming. I'm actually a hardware bloke from way back. Boring office stuff. I have no idea what I'm doing. I work anywhere from 2 to 20 hours a day. I like what I do. Sometimes I get stuck. Sometimes I go for a walk. Sometimes I want to scream when the IDE crashes. I occasionally wake up in the middle of the night and fire up Visual Studio because I've been dreaming about programming and have had an idea. Actually, I woke up last week debugging something in my sleep, came into my office and fixed the problem. I'm sure it's not normal to step through code in your mind. is it?

Ian Darling The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity ... that such complexity can arise ... out of such simplicity ... is the most fabulous extraordinary idea ... once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened - it's just wonderful ... the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned - Douglas Adams

Just yesterday I caught myself planning a revision to some objects I'd been working with this past week and getting really excited over the productivity improvements... whilst standing in the shower. I will never again be able to poke fun at geeks and still hold my head up. There's a line - once you've crossed it there's no coming back. :((

I too came from a hardware oriented direction, I dove into programming because I liked it better... After being bitten by the VC++ bug, I got diagnosed with similar symptoms... While watching a movie in the cinema(completely unrelated) the solution to the problem with which I was struggling suddenly hit me, took a lot of character not to just walk out and at least write a little on paper lest I forget the epiphany I had. At other times while returning from work I sometimes suddenly find myself parked next to my home completely oblivious of the 40minute ride that it takes to get home, because I was working out an improved method of handling something. Guess we all have these moments. ;-)

Thanks everyone, I feel much better knowing I'm not abnormal. I guess I can call myself a programmer now. It's hard being stuck out all alone in an obscure corner of the world, not really knowing what direction I should take, but thanks to this site, and the wonderful people who make it what it is, I feel as if I'm making progress. Thank you all!:rose:
