Does anyone know any good [interesting] sites on interface design? I don't want just the run of the mill "radio buttons vs check boxes" stuff I am finding. Something with some fresh ideas in simple and effective user interface design. Thanks! ---- xian
Being an user interface design engineer for hardware based products (e.g. watches), I can recommed a couple of places. First, for usage-centered design, check out Constantine and Lockwood's site (their book is called Software for Use). Software For Use Also, to see what is bad about UI design, check out Isys Information Architects Brigg Thorp Software Engineer Timex Corporation

The most effective user interface design is the one the user is expecting. Why try to mangle radio buttons and checkboxes when the way they're done now are easily recognizable and not all that bad looking? Change for the sake of change isn't always a good idea, and I have yet to meet a programmer that has any artistic taste at all (other than myself, of course). Why try to mangle radio buttons and checkboxes when the way they're done now are easily recognizable and not all that bad looking? I am just interested in some formalized opinions on traditional user interface design from a modern standpoint. Tradition is, well, tradition for one of two big reasons: 1) It is the best way to do things 2) People are too afraid of change (or just used to a concept) At least in my opinion that is the way things seem to go. I am not looking to do anything radical, I just wanted to see if there are some new ideas out there. I've really not been looking at much new software lately and I am curious. When I said "checkboxes vs radiobuttons" I was referring to the fact that every page I see about user interface design tends to say the same old stuff. I am sure you are familiar with the common mistake of using those two controls incorrectly, as we all are. I really don't need to read about it another time. ---- xian
