Yep, thought of that, but they would just be in the same situation they are now. This kind of thing can really affect a country or industry. Just look at Canadian seal fur, though those models that were agaist it are all wearing it now. I never agreed with the olympics going to china though. Tiananmen square was not that long ago, and the government there only last month said it was still the right thing to do. Its always considered it a political endorsment of what is a cruel and represive elite who are the government. I was asked recently about offloading some work to oursourcers and how people thought China was the obvious choice. I pointed out Malaysia was a much better bet, as there is a large Cantoneese/Mandarin speaking comunity if they wanted to target the Chineese market later, and a load of well educated programmers who are cheaper than China. My brother in law has hired some guys out there to help him with a product he has been developing, and he just needed extra hands. And the company ownership laws are not as restrictive as China for forein investors. Everyone is on the China badwagon, though there are much better places to send work, and will probably be appreciated more.

I know it was a typo but it also sums up some people's thoughts about China's actions. "...Everyone is on the China badwagon" I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

They were actually using explosives on the crowd, blowing people up. The area is blocked to forieners. Apparently though this kind of thing goes on all the time. I swear next time I go to buy something and I see made in china on it I'm boycotting it. If enough people did that maybe the government would take notice.

Why would you guys eagerly jump to the conclusion that it must be politically motivated and the Chinese government must be guilty? Use your head, please. Due to the size of the population and uneven levels of development in the country, such incidents (riots) are bound to occur once in a while. The government has policemen and other troops, the number is more than you could imagine, why whould they want to hire thugs carrying shovels? Plus, it is just stupid and hard to make the gunfire and explosion noise your hear from the video using a shovel. If you want to boycott Chinese product, do it for the real reason: your own job. Don't fool yourself into believing that you are doing the chinese people a favor. Please.

That is utter bollocks and has nothing to do with it, though you seem happy to jump to conclusions. If I was woried about my job then I should be worrying about India, Russia or South America as well. I would be worried baout my job if I was in manufacture but I'm not. China is known for its human rights abuses and suppression of free speech. Foreign companies are falling over themselves to get in. Hey, nobody was locked up in China for talking about Waco either. ;P Seriously, I think you are likely to be wrong this time. If the chinese government was afraid of media coverage so that they choose to use shovels to crack down, then why use guns and explosives at all? You have to come very close to see if a person is holding a shovel instead of a gun, but gun shots can be heard miles away. It does not make any sense. Nowadays it is so easy for someone to enhance a news clip by adding sound effect (preferrably gun shots for more sensation) you just cannot believe every thing you see and hear. By the way, I searched CNN for "Shovel China", guess what I found? There is no mention of this story, but a lot of "shovels made in China". :)
