...best speed around, at any price... *cough* Spent some time lurking on another message board recently. Good site, good people, good posts... but wow, is it frustrating to have to wait for a page load every time you want to read replies! Four years i've been using this site, and still - good, threaded message boards are few and far between. Yeah, there's a lot of room for improvement. I'd give a molar for 10 hours alone with the forum code, preferably in a room with no windows. But, all things considered, it's held up pretty well.

From what I've experienced visiting other sites and other forums, CP's is by far the best. Not just content, but implementation. Regular forums, even the ones I use on my sites, drive me nuts. Marc My website

Bah, that's old... and not live. David Wulff has done a fantastic job of taking it to the next level, though. I'm talking something where i could scratch all those little itches that can't be reached with javascript insertion, like messages that don't expand until the page has fully loaded on FireFox, or broken <pre> tags.

It's a local proxy in which you can write filters that not only can insert javascript but also using regular expressions can search and replace any HTML code before it hits your browser. Proxomitron is really nice, but it's lacking in certain areas. A better one IMHO is Privoxy http://www.privoxy.org/[^] To me it seems much more customisable, and the advantage there is an open browser interface, which allows easy insertion of special rules. If you couple that with Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ [^]and the Adblock extension https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=10&application=firefox[^] you'll be able to reduce the noise level down to nearly zero. You can also chain Proxomitron and Privoxy together, which makes the internet look like a text page (mostly) if sheer speed is what you're after (without resorting to lynx http://lynx.browser.org/[^])

Okay, Since I starting using Proxomitron I hardly bothered looking at anything else simply because I've never found any web page modification I wanted that I couldn't do in Proxomitron. I am curious, (not challenging) what can Privoxy do that Proxomitron can't? I realize that not everyone will take to Proxomitron's version of regular expressions so user-friendliness may be an issue to newcomers. Steve T

And with Shog's grease monkey script, things couldn't be better. Well, I suppose I could hack up my own grease monkey script to change the color of things (I know, I know.. heresy! ;)) An eye for a tooth will only make you see weird things.

One major difference is that Proxomitron's author is dead now, and the source code is gone, while Privoxy is an OSS project, meaning it will be constantly upgraded. I see dead pixels Yes, even I am blogging now!

Open Source is great but for any snapshot of a project (which is what I am interrsted in right now) the fact of Open Source adds exactly zero value. Again, I am not claiming Proxomitron is necessarily better than any other web filter. It's simply that I know Proxomitron's language very well after years of use, and have not yet been faced with a website manipulation I wanted to do and couldn't. I'm certainly willing to change to or add on Privoxy if it offers something I don't already have in Proxomitron but if not why should I lengthen my proxy chain unnecessarily? ...meaning it will be constantly upgraded. Sure, I can adopt it anytime I want, but until then... Steve T
