Media Player Recommendations

I like iTunes, but the song databae seems limited. I've ripped 2 CDs and neither of them were recognized, yet WMP finds them immediately.
That's odd. Both iTunes and WMP have licenses for the Gracenote CDDB...so they should be the same.

I need to commit to using a single player. -I don't like Windows Media Player for 2 reasons. I can't copy my CDs to mp3 format and the UI for managing songs, artists, etc really sucks. -Real Player is awesome, except it's riddled with spyware. -WinAmp works, but it doesn't play .ra files. I'm not sure how good the UI is for managing songs. Any suggestions? It's good to be alive, Josef Wainz Programmer Analyst
Media Monkey Don't know about ra files though as I've not heard of them. But it seems to play just about everything else pseudonym67 My Articles[^] "So keep that smile on your face. just to be different i have used and liked jet audio for several years. it is the only player i have ever found that will open all of my movies and music, regardless of format. so long as quick time and real player are installed it will use the codecs and play those files in a standard interface, so i don't have to put up with changing players all the time :) i think you do have to purchase a plugin for ripping to mp3 though, but i am not certain off hand. zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

Not in Media Player 10, nor in 9 IIRC. Tools, Options, Rip Music tab, under Format select mp3. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder
Your right, just downloaded v10 and voila mp3 is an option. Rip with wmp and listen w/iTunes. Thx.

Nope just tried both, wmp found the songs immediately. iTunes, even after requesting it to get CD Song Names doesn't find anything.

Media Player 10 will rip to MP3 if you want, but why would you want to when WMA is better?

I want a format I can play on anything, not just my desktop.

And the small executive stereo systems are JUST starting to support WMA. Many already support MP3. I have a Philips with PC-Link that will play the MP3 directly from my hard drive to the stereo system. I don't have to burn the CD, just RIP it to the computer's hard disk.

Real Player has spyware? I thought it was just bloated and showed some ads...

Is there a song database? When I rip a CD, it's nice for all the song info to automatically get assigned. WMP does a nice job at this.

For video, Media Player Classic[^] in conjunction with ffdshow for the codecs. For audio, foobar2000[^] is definitely the choice for me. fb2k can do anything under the sun. In the betas of version 0.9[^] it can rip securely from CDs into any format you have configured an encoder for. It has a powerful masstagger to place tags on your files with. It even feeds your cat. You could always sneak into #foobar2000 on freenode and poke random people for help if you're stuck with something. There's also a new pretty informative wiki[^] too.
