I was amused by the previous post on the (Winter) Olympic Games, where (to name ONE example), the Americans were advised to be less patriotic ... loved John's comment, "bullshit" I would have thought (of the Americans), show me one thats not patriotic and I'll show you someone who's a Canadian in disguise ... so this brings me to an interesting point - how do people out there see us Kiwi's/Australians, how do the Indians see the Yanks and Poms etc this is purely for amusement of course, anyone with over-inflated ego's need not post a reply - Im not 'knocking' any person(s) or countries for their personal/political views on others .. or, how do you see you're own country ?? If I said Australia was a place of sport fanatics, bronzed lifeguards and great looking blondes, (a popular sterotype), I'd be ignoring the the short, fat, ugly baldies like myself - but you get the picture - what we are seen as vs what we are :) I hope this provokes some laughable posts ... For anyone that answers this post I'd be curious to know if they've visited any the countries of which they speak. It's unfortunate that travelling is so expensive. I think it would do wonders for inter-Country relations if people could actually meet and get a direct impression of one another. As an un-travelled American, I think that had this subconscious sense that people in other countries (particularly non-English speaking countries) were very different in their attitudes than me. I had (and still have, I'm sure) a very caricature-ish impression of foreigners. I'm sure the opposite is also true. I know this is hugely cliche, but we are more alike than many of us think. Regards, Dan

Having nothing to go on but Mad Max, Midnight Oil, Subaru commercials and Crocodile Hunter episodes, I'd have to say that all Australians are lean, insane, outdoorsy types with huge knives and dirty clothes. "Men at work" are just the exceptions - they probably moved there from England when they were young, or something. -c

Australia reminds me of that short kid that's always trying to play football (American, real) with the big kids. "Aww come on guys let me play". "I'm big enough to play". It doesn't matter that the big kids are still ignoring him, he still keeps talking and trying to convince them to let him play. As an American, I see us as a big fat pushy person on vacation. "Oh, look at the cute Aimish [sic] honey". "Come on take my picture with him". (Fat lady waddles up to some poor unsuspecting Amish fellow). ;) Ritch

In 1965 when I was in Vietnam I had a chance to spend almost a month in Australia. I had a blast. The people I met reminded me a lot of my native Texans except for the accent. Friendly people to a fault, love to argue, love to eat, like to have fun. I always have and always will have a warm fuzzy spot in my heart for Ozzies. BTW We had a lot of fun trading with the Australian soldiers in Nam. They had these really great camo outfits with all kinds of hidden pockets that we really liked. And these great hats. Main trading implements was booze ( of any type ) and blue jeans and paperback books. They caught on real quick about the war souviniers ( VC unit flags, belt buckles, sandals with blood on them etc.. ). Most , if not all, were fakes. You could take a flare parachute to a local tailor and have flags made to order, same with the buckles ( made of 105 mm shell casings ).
