As I read in your bio you once worked for sonardyne.co.uk A friend of me need a system to measure and map the bottom of a reservoir so they can calculate the correct amount of water in it, and sometimes they when they "flush" the reservoir they want to calculate how much sediments they "flushed" out of the reservoir. I am thinking about something like a sonar system coupled with GPS. It should be a relativly small system in size, so that they can mount it on a relative small boat. Do you know such a system? Cheers Harald bb |~ bb

Anna might not see your post, so I suggest you find one of her posts and email her as well. Cheers, Vikram.

If I understand your requirement correctly, you are looking for a surface mounted sonar/GPS mapping solution? Sonardyne's products are actually aimed at a slightly different market - precise positioning of Removely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), Divers, etc. For small scale projects in shallow water (up to 100m), the company offers a Long Baseline system called Prospector[^], which uses small easily portable sonar beacons deployed on the seabed and a GPS, compass and acoustic transceiver fitted to a surface vessel to position an ROV or diver in 3 dimensions using (I seem to remember) HF ranging. It's pretty accurate, and quite cost effective for small scale surverying requirements. There's also an Ultra Short Baseline product called Scout USBL[^] which uses a single multi-phase USBL transceiver rather than an LBL transceiver and 4-6 beacons used by Prospector. Although from your description I suspect these sorts of system aren't quite what you need, it's certainly worth contacting the company as they may be able to point you in the right direction. Rather than calling the head office in Blackbushe, I'd actually suggest you try contacting an ex colleague of mine called Peter Holt in the company's Plymouth office. If anyone will know what sort of solutions exist in this area, he will - he has a lot of connections in the survey market, and is the responsible for most of the external surveying work (e.g the Mary Rose and U507) the company does to showcase its products. Good luck! I wish! I never got anything for the multi-million pound order I and several others landed for Racal a few years back, so why break the habit of a lifetime? How's life treating you anyways? It's been a while since our paths crossed (assuming you're the same Rob Caterall I worked with a while back of course!). Yes, it's been almost 5 years since I left. I see you've left, too - do you keep in touch with anyone there?

Yep - I left in the middle of August, about a month after Martin (he's working for Logica in Camberley now). I've been back a few times since, and it's pretty much the same as you'd expect! To be honest, after 6 years I needed a change...and I've certainly got one! In the last year my sights have lifted dramatically, to the point where I'm just an interested in running a company as doing the technical stuff. Weird, huh? Anna :rose: Riverblade Ltd - Software Consultancy Services Anna's Place | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up.
