Whoop-te-dooo X| I'm going to have to pay for this over the next few years and I'm not going to get any benefit from it. It is another chance for the south-east of England to suck money from the rest of the UK. Scotland and the North of England desperately need good sports facilities (especially given recent reports that in these regions the general health of people needs to improve) but that's not going to happen now because they will mostly be in London and the south-east of England. Glasgow is promised a new sports training facility if London won the bid, but that is blatant tokenism at best. There needs to be a general improvement across the whole country in each community. :mad:

Oh come now, this is just bad blood. The Olympics will be good for Britain as a whole. Yes, London will get the biggest benefit, but I don't think we would have stood a chance if it had been anywhere else in Britain but London - it's the only world-class city we've got. Coming from the north of England I'm used to being at the back of the queue, but I'd rather it be hosted in London then it not be hosted here at all.

Personally, I would have rather it went to Madrid - but they were a bit of an outside chance really. It already has much better transport infrastructure. There is already a culture of sport. The climate is a wonderful dry heat in the summer, unlike the oppressive humid heat in London. Everything is much more reasonably priced, so that when the hotels and bars hike their prices up it won't seem as expensive as London. All round, a much better location in my opinion.

too bad I couldn't care less :(( Since moving to Australia the Olympics have become little more than a village competition for me. I was used to a once-every-4-years-lifetime experience, so many events, so many athletes, so much drama and excitement. Now I end up seeing only 1% of what happens there (but you get to see some of the races at least 10 times a day, for days on end), and plenty of interviews with the grandmother of whoever won some event or another. Last time the local TV (Channel 7) only showed swimming, softball, hockey and the ceremonies. I might have forgot one discipline here, but almost certainly not two. It was even worse during the Sydney Olympics, when during the swimming competition they only put names and flags over the lanes with the Australian swimmers. On top of that the level of professionalism of the presenters is abysmal. The chances of them pronouncing properly the names of non-English native athletes are zero. Yes, foreign manes are always hard to get right, but when you are there, on location, and you do that for a living, have the common courtesy to talk to someone in the other delegations when you have to present an event. Do it at least for the top athletes is you are too lazy or stupid to do more than that. But no, it's so much easier to make fun of their names and of their less than perfect English. OGR
