Such a power source could be made as large and robust as necessary, without adding further weight and inconvenience to the user. Potentially, it could even run off the small amount of power supplied by your computer's USB connections - similar to those little USB fans that have become so popular. True, it may take a fair bit of work to set up such a system, but surely not too much for a rainy day project - give it a go and report back, why don't you?

Hey, that's an excellent idea. Why didn't I think of that. In fact, I think I've seen such a backward-thinking device in my local CompUSA. I asked the guy what it was and he said it's a museum piece, just there for display and entertainment. LOL. You'd think this was 1985 or something.

Then buy a Logitech MX 700 or MX Laser mouse. Just dock your mouse to recharge batteries when your not using it. I love mine!

Please someone of you fantastic engineers develope the following: A computer mouse that runs on the heat from the user's hand or uses the electrical field existing in the human body. I'm tired of replacing my batteries in my mouse. Please? Please?

          1. You have to use their mouse pad. I've grown rather fond of my gel-wrist-rest mouse pad, thank you. 2. You have to have it positioned at least 10" away from a CRT. My current mouse sits from 5-7" from my CRT, so that's out. :|

How about putting the smarts into the pad, so that the pointer bit's as simple as it can get? Something like this[^], maybe?

I was also thinking about the problem with the optical movement sensor you get on perfectly plain surfaces or glass surfaces which fool the sensor. Instead of using a light you could use a small roller device that rolls along the surface and in turn rolls a small sensor inside the mouse. For full 2D freedom you could use paired cylindrical rollers, or - and I'm not sure how feasible this is - a spherical ball. cheers, Chris Maunder

Sounds risky, Chris. The term mouse balls would lend itself to abuse in the form of low-grade, tasteless jokes about you-know-what. Why not make a mouse sphere (I hesitate to encourage prurient thoughts among the members) dotted with uniformly spaced cylindrical magnets, alternating in polarity. The body of the mouse where the sphere is housed would be covered with pickup coils which generate and inductively boost the signals from the moving magnetic sphere, followed by a simple rectifier assembly. The rectified dc current could be stored by a modern super-capacitor for use while engaging in sedate activities like browsing pr0n, and the frenzied motions of a rousing video game should provide enough power to recharge the capacitor. Heck, with a suitable selection of video games it could probably replace the entire PC power supply unit. Somebody get on it - I'll settle for 10% of gross revenues. "...putting all your eggs in one basket along with your bowling ball and gym clothes only gets you scrambled eggs and an extra laundry day... One solution is to get a corded optical mouse, flip it over and then move the mouse pad around on top of it. Yes, it's a little awkward and takes a while getting used to, but it's cordless!
