It's about 85-90 degrees F in the L.A. and costal Southern California areas this whole week -- so hot...and so unusual. Dude. It's 9:40PM here now. It's been dark for close to an hour. It's finally down to 91F - we're sitting outside, enjoying the cool night air. We're flying out to CA in a week to get away from the heat...!

I must be getting acclimated to Phoenix - we're hitting 112 or so each day and it feels comfortable. When I was in the Philippines last week I was shivering in 65 degrees... gawd knows how I'm going to cope with Melbourne in late September! It's been above 95 F consistently here (Switzerland) for the last 2 weeks.... X| The genius of the true fool is that he can mess up a foolproof plan.

I don't think I'll ever get used to this. The weather service isn't predicting highs this week - they gave up at 120+. It's cloudy, hot, and feels like trying to breathe hot water outside. Trees are dying, because they can't transpire - it's too humid for water to evaporate from the leaves, so none is being taken up through the roots. Lizards are looking for shade, rabbits are getting used to carrots al dente, straight from the garden. The breeze from the south feels like facing into a hair dryer. I thought I was acclimated to this, yet last week in Vancouver it felt perfectly warm at 75 (though my relatives were all rejoicing in the "heat wave").:-D I think it's time to go back for a few days! Today looks like the sort of day when anything short of snow could happen. It's what we used to call 'earthquake weather' when I was growing up in the PRC. Lightning, with or without rain, is likely sometime today, and high winds could start at any moment. It's the first official day of monsoon season, and it's going to be a long one I'm afraid. It's the combination of hurricane Emily and a high pressure system over Nevada. Emily is throwing crap our way and that's causing the humidity. For people not in Socal, we get significant humidity for maybe 5-7 days over the course of a whole summer.
