Is there any site that lets you download files via email?

Hello guys, As you all are quite well aware of, I suffer extensively from a lack of bandwidth. But my ISP POP email is fast. Now what I am wondering is whether there are any download sites that allows me to download files via email. I assume my ISP has a fast server at their end. Thus the download is done at gateway speeds. Then I POP it at the fastest speed I can get. I have tested this out. I tried sending myself 2 MB files and they come faster than my normal browsing or downloading speeds. I hope you understand what I am trying to say. There must be sites huh? Nish, I'd be happy to download large files for you and burn you a CD. My only concern is that it might get filched at your local PO (from past experience). How can mail attachment be faster when the size of the file is increased by 33% every time you attach it to a message due to Base64 encoding? :confused:

Yes it will be faster to download from source to ISP, but then he still will have to download it from ISP over the same modem connection...

Case (1) :- Download 500 KB file directly At 1 KB per sc this takes 500 seconds [just over 8 mins] Case (2) :- The 500 KB is mailed to me. It is now 700 KB cause of all the extra MIME stuff. Step(1) - It reaches my ISP's SMTP [in a few seconds because the ISP gateway is around 10 MBPS and the HTTP server is also damn fast. Lets assume it comes in 8 seconds. Step (2) - I POP the 700 KB mail at almost 5 KB per sec which means I take 140 secds to download it. [I get 5 KBPS because from my machine to the ISP it's only 3-4 network hopes] Total time = 148 seconds Time saved = approx 6 minutes I rest my case. Hmm... Well, if it works - it works. I just wanted to understand the reasoning behind it being faster. When I had modem I was also trying different things to make downloads faster and I've found that I could use my ISP's shell account to get files to their Linux box first and then download it from there. I guess it is the same idea only without mail involved. Can you find an ISP that provides shell accounts there where you live?

Interesting problem, Nish... How about a different sort of solution, to wit. Put a page on your website that you can visit when you find a likely download. On that page you enter the URL of the file you want. It then uses FTP to copy it to your space on the webserver. That should be quick. The second part is that when a downloaded file appears in that space, a script breaks it into smaller blocks, perhaps 50kB or so. Every few minutes it would check your email account and, if there was no email waiting for you to pick up, it would post one with one of these small blocks of code as an attachment. Each time your mail client picks up the mail, one of these packets would be sent to your machine at home, and another would take its place in the queue, until the entire file (in pieces) has been sent to you. At home you would run an integrator that would reassemble all the pieces into one file and let you try it out. If you leave your system on and set it you check mail every 10 minutes or so, you could grab a bunch of files while you're wasting your valuable time doing trivial stuff like work!

I think they called their thing FTP mail or something... Many ISPs have a size limit on the files they'll allow into mailboxes, you might want to check if there is anything like this with your ISP... I tried sending more than 5 MB and it works. Every evening at 7 AM a warning mail of space-quota exceeded is sent. Since I POP the whole thing daily, this wont be a problem. I mean they sent the warning and withwin 2 hrs I POP the mail. Thus they never notice as even the warning is an auto process. Of course if they have some kind of log for people who keep going above the quota and they find that I do that everyday... Hi Nish! Years ago i've used a piece of software that allowed me to do just what you're asking. I can't remember the name unfortunately, but it was probably just some kind of frontend to the services you'll find if you follow these links.

Hello Kannan, I am on cable at home now, but at 16 kbps [that's bits, not bytes]. Means I get only 2 KB/s during day time. At night they relax the restriction and I get 64 kbps which is around 7 KB/s. But I find that the POP mail is faster. I can POP a 1 MB attachment in one minute. That means I get about 160 kbps [17 KB/s] when I POP. So I am trying to take advantage of that. Regards Nish p.s. It does not always work and you have to be pretty damned nice and complimentary about their site (read: kiss ass) to have any chance, but if you need a file urgently it can happen :) Also some ISPs offer the service to their customers, they just don't publicise the fact. You could try emailing your ISP and asking if they will download it to their server and then they can give you an URL which will be much quicker to download from. Other ISPs do this automatically by caching sites like Tucows and MSDN.
