 You were all so right about it being a nightmare language. I'm back with C++ and it feels better than when I got back with my ex and we managed to sort out all. Found an interesting book by someone who wrote a C++ interpreter called Under C.(C++ by Example-Steve Donovan) Made me realize that there are better things to do in life than make lots of money and get on with everyone you work with. Years ago, I attended a meeting with Micro$oft in Phoenix, where I was able to chat with the people who develop this stuff for us. One of the developers I talked to declined to give an "official" answer when I asked which technology I should devote more time to - Access or FoxPro. But the unofficial answer was, spend more time with Access. FoxPro was on its way out then, and it's looking like Access is soon to follow. But I like it, and intend to keep using it when appropriate... If you love C++ and can figure out how to make it talk to a database, go for it. Doing what you love is far more important than making lots of money, but I'd be cautious about the phrase about getting on with everyone. In this forum, there will be more than one way of reading that:-D

Access is the only file based database technology we have now. Everything else is port based. It's real easy with access. simply copy and distribute the MDB along with your software. Windows comes with the Access ODBC drivers pre-installed. Now I'm confused, Nish. What do you mean by port-based? I'm familiar with the single file .mdb organization for Access databases, but I was under the impression that other approaches use a similar format. What if I create a multi-table database at runtime in VB - will that generate multiple files, or just one distributable resource?

I'm not sure if it was intentionally done, but your email address is being rejected... It's either a bogus address in your profile, or a possible problem with your ISP. If you selected the option to be notified when someone posts a reply to your posting, it automatically sends an email to you, addressed as from the person replying. My reply resulted in an email response indicating an unknown user.

Not only do they exist, when I tried to resign my boss wouldn't let me. He told me that C++ was redundant, that Foxpro was the only way to go, that there were IMPORTANT people keeping a eye on Microsoft stopping them from ruining a good product or discontinuing it and that he could not possibly allow me to ruin my live and career by resigning! The only way I could finally resign was to send a formal letter of resignation by E-mail. To overcome everything is to reach an invisible height where users cease to exist

Used ADO coolly and sent it to the clients. Nothing worked. Then I realized that my machine had MDAC 2.7 [which was installed by VS .NET beta 2.0] and I sent it to them and things were fine... SQL server, MySQL, PostGres, Oracle all have a TCP server listening at some port. Clients [the ADO/ODBC drivers] connect to this port and use TCP chat. In Access they open the MDB and read it as a flat binary file . The way you refuse to let someone resign is you say: "Why ever could you wish to leave?" and to every answer you reply with what you consider to be sound reasoning and a definite "now that that is sorted give me the next problem" Very effective especially if you keep on repeating "No, definitely not" and talk over whoever is trying to argue a point. I tried to introduce the idea of COM but got it's been working fine for the last 20 years why change. THAT is when I decided to leave. As for Microsoft burying the body in the desert I think this guy waited till they were gone and reserrected it chanting "never change", and is now single handedly keeping it alive. He claims THEY will never allow Microsoft to get away with IT so Microsoft is toeing the line, the result being Visual FoxPro. I tried telling him that not one of the 7 bookshops I contacted even knew what FoxPro was never mind stocking the books, he replied that we live in a backward country and what else did I need to discuss with him. In his defense he is a nutter but he truly beliefs alll he says and his wife is a fab cook;P To overcome everything is to reach an invisible height where users cease to exist

More like he knew that he had no chance of finding anyone else willing to accept the resume stain that is FoxPro as a career choice. For the record, M$ bought FoxPro because it was better than Access, and they bought it to kill it, and bury the body in the desert where no-one would find it. Ha, Ha I wish I spoke to you first before resigning. I have a friend who worked for a telephone company, hated it so much he just got up and left on day four and they continued paying his salary into his acount for the next 5 months. Never even realized he was gone:laugh: To overcome everything is to reach an invisible height where users cease to exist
