What's funny is that icons look pretty good in 256 colors. Yet there is something missing. That's why you and I and everyone else want the icons in 24 bit color. For such a small thing as an icon being less beautiful, a lot of people including me would be prepared to reinstall windows Nish Nish was here, now Nish has gone; He left his soul, to turn you on; Those who knew Nish, knew him well; Those who didn't, can go to hell. I am beginning to find other things around the system f**king up also, such as DD applications now run at about 10% the original speed. That would certainly cause DD to slow down; not sure if that would affect icon colors (possible though). James Sonork ID: 100.11138 - Hasaki "My words but a whisper -- your deafness a SHOUT. Yes - it's all the way up, as it has always been. Like I said, I honestly haven't changed a thing, nor run any programs or do anything I don't do regularly. This problem just "appeared" litterally overnight (fri/sat). ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. Am doing. I've already spent about thirty minutes looking at every entry matching "icon", but that didn't help. I'll try video, bbp, "256", "8 bit", etc, though. Roger Wright wrote: I won't bother with the usual disclaimer about backing up the Registry first Already did that too. I have task scheduler automatically backup the registry every Friday night, which is when NAV does it's weekly scan too. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. I found that key the first time I searched the registry, and it said 16 as I expected it to. I've also (now) been through it with all the other search terms too, and found nothing. Now as a last resort I'll have to spend a few hours trawling through the MS KB. I say "as a last resort" as I've never had any luck there finding anything useful in any short amount of time. Add to that the fact I am 2 days overdue on a status report I owe a client (see the SQL forum), and I have at least four hours work on that tonight, and you have one very tired and very pissed off man. (edit: it is 12:30 AM on a Monday morning here at the moment :() I't alsmost to the stage where I will be disowning all my Microsoft software (and that lovely .NET basket ball set they sent me), and signing up for the slahdot newsletter... ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. Thw worst thing about windows is that it messes up without us doing anything to it. I mean I can understand if it screws up when I install a new game or a new driver. But to go bananas just on a whim is crazy. Its happened to me too. I've had my sound card refusing to give sound all of a sudden and despite everything I tried. That's during my Win 95 days. Crazy! Thanks for the link and the offer, but after reading it a few times it seems we have completely unrelated problems. I'll keep it in my bookmarks for the time being though, to see where it goes. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk "I loathe people who keep dogs. Even though the link may not have been useful, it must have helped psycologically to know that other people have troubles too eh? Its happened to me. I have been totally upset with my life and then find other people in deeper shit than I am and then everything kinda looks okay. I am not saying that we should be happy at other people's bad luck, it's just that, it helps to give us a better perspective of the world in general. Its a bit like that saying, "I was sad cause I didnt have a new pair of shoes till I saw a man who didnt have any feet" Nish Nish was here, now Nish has gone; He left his soul, to turn you on; Those who knew Nish, knew him well; Those who didn't, can go to hell. I've seen it expressed as nibble, nYble, and NYBL. I'm not sure which is official, but I'm prone to nYble. Perhaps we should form an ad hoc standards committee to create a standard reference we can all live with... There's no reason we can't, and no reason that we Cpians shouldn't assert ourselves as an authoritative body on this subject!

One thing you can try is to get PowerToys and go to the rebuild tab. Select rebuild icons and that should reset them all. I've had this happen on Windows 2000 and XP. Believe it or not, I was able to use the PowerToys for Windows 2000 on Windows XP to do the same thing. Microsoft released a new version of PowerToys for XP, but it doesn't have this feature. I keep both versions installed on my PC "just in case." Brigg Thorp Software Engineer Timex Corporation
