Seems same problem happens on Discovery.:sigh: I wish and pray for the safety returning of the Discovery crew. Seems human's space explorer will be postponed.:sigh: SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) -- The shuttle Discovery, like Columbia, lost a large chunk of foam debris during liftoff that could have threatened the return of the seven astronauts, NASA said Wednesday. http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/science/AP-Space-Shuttle.html?hp&ex=1122523200&en=085e37e361a792a5&ei=5094&partner=homepage[^]

There is always some tile damage each flight. However, they are grounding the fleet since the problem that they tried to correct is still happening. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

NASA has emergency procedures in place that were not available before, evac to space station as a last resort. So far none of the damage looks deadly, but they are in areas that will require further examination to evaluate a final decision. The loss of the foam shows the danger from the last mission was not fixed, which puts future missions in danger, the same danger that the shuttles have always been in (we just know now). Be glad that NASA is imaging the shuttle in flight rather than just shrugging shoulders and "seeing what happens" when it comes down. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. That's pretty scary stuff. If you can... let us know if anything looks weird. Good to know they can get on the space station. How long would a rescue take and how long could they stay there or do you know? - Rex

How long would a rescue take and how long could they stay there or do you know? Prior to launch, NASA and news kicked up the "emergency" situation scenerios. Best case, no damage, mid-level, repair in space, worst-case evac to space station and release the shuttle to burn up. We ran off Russian rockets for over two years with the Shuttle grounded, so they would simply have to take numbers as to who could come down and when. As for imagery, not my department, my boss works with my group and that group. Wether he will tell me or not, I do not know. In any case until NASA says release the info, we would not be able to comment on it. I can easily say we imaged it, well so did another 99 new cameras from NASA and other groups around the USA. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I knew you'd have to be careful. But once it's public shoot me an email. I don't get into the news but I'd like to know that our people are okay. - Rex

I read earlier today in a Mexican newspaper (online, some 5 hours ago) that the lost piece of foam was similar to that of Columbia, but this time it had not hit the shuttle (last time it hit th wing) so they were not expecting any danger. (I opened your link and was waiting for it to load, so I had not read it -- it says the same thing I read.) Let's hope everything comes out fine. -- LuisR

I'll try, but they may not even tell me. I leave for Los Angeles on Saturday for Siggraph Conference, so by the time NASA examines it after we process it, I'll be taking the metro to the convention center. :) However, since I do augmented (virtual+ live) I may be asked to do a hybrid augmented display of their output to compare "perfect" to real to look for more differences. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau.
