Java thread question

There's no Java forum here. Sun first decided to sue Microsoft for changing Java, then they sued Microsoft for not supporting it anymore. Sun are pretty stupid, IMO. The .NET framework has J# as an optional download, it's Java like, and you can get an idea of how many people use it by the fact that there's no forum here. I hope someone else uses Java and can make a suggestion of another site, I'm afraid I do not know. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

Yeah, you're the third one to tell me. The big question is, how many other hidden forums are there ? Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

That's lame, we have a forum for it but for some reason that nobody knows we hide it. What are we ashamed of it? What's the deal? Why even have it? Nobody can get to it without knowing the secret pass phrase...

Sun's site is filled with McDonald-qualified users. I couldn't stand hanging around after realizing their misinformed and biased attitudes. That's basically why I'm looking elsewhere for a decent forum as a means of communication.
Seems like a bash on McDonald goers to me. Are you sure McDonald goers are *that* bad?

code-frog wrote: "ca-oo-du-pa-roh-je-ct" CODEPROJECT and Java doesn't officially exist here. Well, it IS a Windows specific site. Who in their right mind would use Java for any GUI app, let alone a Windows one ? code-frog wrote: That's lame, we have a forum for it but for some reason that nobody knows we hide it. Like I said, are you SURE it's hidden on purpose ? Surely it would make more sense not to have one, if there was an anti-Java policy. We have a VB forum, so obviously we let anyone in around here, I don't see why Java would be only 1/2 way through the door... Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

I didn't know we had an OS specific affiliation? You make an excellent point about Java and UI's and I cannot answer that other than to say I'm currently working on a program that has to run on Windows, is being developed on Windows but several MAC and Linux users want it to. The guy that is asking me to write it also asked me to see if I could do one for MAC and Linux too. While coding 1 system for 3 platforms and having 3 code-bases sounds fun I'd rather have one code-base for 3 platforms that performs like a sick dog on a 110 degree day. AND! As you pointed out Microsoft has a JVM (it's been swept under the rug but they do have one, heck of a lot better than Sun's too). So to sum all that up... You are absolutely correct but the question still remains. Why have it *and* hide it? Either make it public or delete it right? That's what eats me. Either it's deleted or everyone can use it. Am I off base here? - Rex

Christian Graus wrote: Like I said, are you SURE it's hidden on purpose ? That's an excellent question and I cannot answer it. I've done searches all over most of the pages here looking for Java and have come up empty. If it's links were accidentally deleted then nobody is in a real big hurry to fix them. Pretty funny statement about VB programmers. Made me laugh with that one. If you find out let me know because I've been wondering for about 2 weeks.;)

code-frog wrote: I didn't know we had an OS specific affiliation? Really ? Didn't spot that most of the articles use Microsoft only libraries ? I don't think it's a 'no Mac users here' thing, just that the focus of hte site is on Windows development. code-frog wrote: Why have it *and* hide it? Christian Graus wrote: Are you sure it's hidden on purpose ? Seems weird to me. If I remember correctly, the Java forum was withdrawn through lack of use. Given that CP has always had a more Microsoft development centric view, there has always been very little interest in asking and answering questions about Java. I'm sure Chris will pop up with the real reason. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

My understand is that Sun sued Microsoft initially because Microsoft extended Java in with JVM. They made changes which meant that J++ would compile code that wouldn't run on other platforms. Something like that. Unlike Microsoft with C#, Sun do not allow Java to be subject to an external standards process ( although I'd say this is the main reason C# does it ), and they sued to control their language. Microsoft made changes to make Java more useful, Sun sued because they wanted the language to remain cross platform in every implimentation. Microsoft removed the JVM because they didn't like getting sued, I reckon. Microsoft supports Java, I run a JVM on this XP Pro machine. They just don't ship it as standard anymore. Good luck. A google of 'Java Forum' gives a lot of hits, surely somethign there is worthwhile ? Are the USENET forums still in much use ? I got heaps of newsgroup support when I started in c++, they were buzzing back then. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++
