It is just not NASA's decade as the shuttle fleet is grounded once again.[^] I hope someone over at ground control remembers to tell the boys up in Discovery. I know safety is important but this is becoming a bit of a farce. Is NASA tied up in too much red-tape to do anything effective about the shuttles? regards, Paul Watson South Africa PMW Photography Gary Kirkham wrote: The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the cliché...Star Trek had it in spades.

Could be all those old technologies from the earlier days of the shuttle that they still have to rely on ̶ the parallel of Microsoft's 'backward compatibility' (excess baggage?) in the previous version of Windows. Guess the term 'rocket science' still relevant  Developing in Heaven :o)
Programmers are so good at debugging that they just don't know how to say sorry in the real world. If you think my statement above is wrong, show me the line I will fix it. See?

I guess we might end up looking towards the Russians for some help here again. That good old relaible Soyuz[^].

Yep - the only thing NASA has proven is that government bureaucracy and exploration are simply and mutually incompatible. Government controlled space science should strictly limited to sending unmanned probes, specifically designed with narrow mission parameters, where they need to go. Otherwise, if there is a need for manned space flight, it should be left to private enterprise. I mean, if some Boeing employees get killed in sub-orbit we can all just shrug and go about out business. But every time some of our space heroes die in the bold attempt to go where no man has gone before, everything has to come to a stop until we can absolutlely assure ourselves that our heroes are safe. What a dumb way to go about exploring the Universe. "Capitalism is the source of all true freedom."

This is the same as it is with anything. I am only considering how long the same design has been in service. The space shuttle has been in service since 1981. The Russians have been using the Soyuz type since 1967.

Richard Stringer wrote: it never lived up to its promise in the first place. This is because of the NASA bureaucracy though. They had one design and never changed it aside form simple things to keep it updated and some safety stuff. Really I see this in a lot of industry. Look at the cool concept cars you see in car shows. How many of those cool cars do you see on the road today? None. Why? Because all they are is toys. Dreams. We should have been up to version 3 of the Space Shuttle by now with larger payloads, better engines and safer flights. Sheesh, we are still taking off vertically.
