I love my 4Mbps Comcast cable connection - when it works. I've recently been experiencing loss of service for 3-6 hours about once a week. The problem appears to be at Comcast's end, because the service magically returns to life on its own. I'm considering moving to Verizon DSL, which while much slower, would be a better bet if it's more reliable than Comcast. I'd be curious to know how other CPians feel about the quality and reliability of Verizon's service. /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Music | Articles | Freeware | Trips ravib(at)ravib(dot)com

I have exhausted my patience with my cable video service. The "reception" for my analog channels is worse than "rabbit ears" with some channels totally fogged. The digital channels are OK, but only when they work. Which seems to be less and less. I could sit and watch "This channel should be available shortly" for hours on end. I'm afraid I was less than cordial to the poor Comcast lady who tried to sell me on the wonders of their cable internet service. I can only imagine the "This socket will be available shortly" dialog box I would be staring at now trying to use Comcast to access the internet. ;) Verizon DSL was trouble free. Verizon FiOS (our area has fiber available up to the house) is extremely great. When my irrigation system was installed this year, Verizon didn't mark their cables before work started so they were cut. The FiOS to replace it was installed and up in 2 days. When the marked Comcast cable was cut with a shovel (because it was only buried 2 inches deep!) I had replacement cable laying on my lawn for two weeks until they managed to come and bury it. I wasn't home during the repair, so I can't say how deeply they bothered to bury it this time. As soon as I can get around to it, I'll be buying a small satellite dish and be free of Comcast. If you quit Comcast, be sure and retain your receipt. I moved out of state once and months later had a collection agency calling me because one of Comcasts predecessor companies had lost track of me closing my account out with a cash payment. - Matt Jessick

do NOT use Verizon - we have had NOTHING but problems with their service both for DSL and phone (well really the phone, but when the line goes out, that fucks up the DSL too). ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! SELECT * FROM User WHERE Clue > 0 0 rows returned Save an Orange - Use the VCF!

OK I'll modify my complaint agains Verizon now that I read Matt's comments - if you can get fiber, great, go for it. Most of us can't so it's not yet an option which means you're stuck with old copper lines. In NYC, where I live, our whole phone service regularly drops out whenever it rains really hard. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! I have Verizon DSL, and never have any problems. My folks live just down the street and they constantly have problems with thier Verizon DSL. They have to turn off the DSL box and turn it back on about once every couple of days.

About 45% of the spam I receive is from the comcast.com domain - that alone is enough reason for me to switch providers. As to quality, I have never heard a complaint about DSL download speeds - they're quite adequate. The uplink speed is what you have to worry about. If you do a lot of server activities you may be disappointed by Verizon. But still, a slow site is far preferable over one that is not available.
