Clean & Tidy or Disaster & Clutter...

How would you describe your work area? A. Clean and tidy with every thing it's place and every place has it's thing. B. A total disaster you have to rummage just to find a pen and paper. C. Totally depends on how busy I am and how much stress I have. Sometimes it grows on it's own and at others I keep it carefully groomed. My work area is a total disaster at the moment and it's driving me totally nuts. I hate it and need to get organized before I miss something important in the pile of refuse. Probably will have to do that sometime tomorrow I suppose. Thought it would be interesting to hear from some of you if you are tidy:-> or slobs:wtf:.

I had a boss once who had the same desk for about 10 years. Every horizontal surface was piled with papers higher than her head when she was sitting so you could never tell if she was there or not. We all joked about throwing a match in there.

C tending towards B My boss and I were moved into an office with a more senior manager a few years ago who believed in a Clear Desk policy. He even commented that I shouldn't have more than one book out at a time and that I should put them on a shelf (in another room) when I wasn't reading them!! In response I built a nice wall out of all my programming reference books on my desk. ;P

C--I get so involved in what I am doing that the desktop becomes a landing place for all the junk I get handed that I am going to have to deal with sooner or later, but don’t want to interrupt what I am working on to deal with it right now. I hardly ever make to the carefully groomed stage, but start finding it hard to concentrate when it reaches the disaster stage. Jim

I don't keep things spotless or super-organized, but my desk isn't cluttered either. It just has that nice lived-in (on?) look. When things do get too hectic though, I always find I have a growing pile on the far corner of desk with "unknown" papers. Those are things that are in the way, but I don't want to decide at the moment whether to throw them away or not. Eventually, I throw most of it away though. I guess its like a Recycle Bin on my desktop. :rolleyes: BW

I'm disgustingly tidy at work. I may have a few loose sheets of paper and notes laying around, but it's a matter of seconds to clear it up. I'm pretty anal-retentive about it. I can't concentrate if there's a lot of clutter around. My desk here at home, on the other hand, is pretty cluttered. It acts as a collection point for bills, stuff to read, CD's (I'm ripping my CD library; I got an MP3 player for my birthday), and other odds and ends.

He's got the remains of several PC's, reams of paper, bits of hardware, and miscellaneous books, all more or less randomly distributed throughout. It was so bad, one of the Engineering directors saw it a while back and made a point of telling the guy to "clean it up; this isn't a college dorm".
