Hello, It seems that the IBM computers in my office have some kind of problem: 1. just before closing my computer a message telling me that some part of memory has not been readed appears. 2. when I start the computer again it reads: Generic host process for win32 "has encountered a problem and has been closed" ... send this error to Microsoft... NOTE: the part between commas "" has been translated by me so it's almost sure that won't have nothing to do with the real text but it will mean almost the same. after a "Not send" I can continue working OK. Do you have any idea about what to do with that? I'd love to be able to work with those computers as always, but without having to wait for them to be fully closed and without having to answer to that stupid question when the computer starts. As always thank you in advance.

I notice the same error message at the same instant, but my PC is not IBM, it is a self-assembled one... Since I have disabled error reporting, at the next startup the error reporting procedure doesn't appear. I think it is a bug, because MemTest86 does not find any RAM damage. Do you use ZoneAlarm? I believe it is that the problem.

I've seen a similar problem on a machine with the Windows Firewall of XP SP2 installed.

The best thing about SP2 is the uninstall... The tigress is here :-D

No, I don't use ZoneAlarm, so this cannot be the problem. It seems that it's something related to windows... then. Here in my company most of the computers are IBM and I've only seen it with them... my old compaq desktop has never done this, but my brand new IBM laptop always give me this error, this is why I thought about the IBM cause... Well, thank you for your time and help. I'll wait for an update from Microsoft then.

 Aw, come on now. SP2 has been, at least for us, quite solid. Just a machine here or there that shows an error message, probably due to the firewall blocking some app that expected unrestrained network access.

Actually it's the problems with pop-up blocking that annoy me and the way you to have to prevent it (messing with zone settings). The tigress is here :-D

Check the event logs. Make sure it's not related to your page file. How's performance once you get past the error? The event logs really need to be examined. Export it to a log file and email it to me if you want. Both the system event log and the application event log should be examined.

This question would normally be better asked on the Operating System/SysAdmin forum. svchost.exe has virtually no code in it. It's simply used to host services written as DLLs. So the question becomes which DLL is the one that caused the crash. I would recommend clicking 'Send Report'. Microsoft can't fix the problem if they don't know about it. Stability. What an interesting concept. -- Chris Maunder

Actually, we have enough machines that we have both situations. All my programming machines (4) are SP2, only one has problems with it and my personal opinion is someone within the company ... injured that laptop. Other machines have had issues with SP2, but they were things the average person would never have, Orion Image capture drivers (high speed digital capture boards) and other high end expensive "stuff." Most of my work is now with off-the-shelf hardware, I even stopped requesting Quadro boards and started using Geforce gaming boards. Therefore almost every machine that I ship for my software never has problems with SP2, but others within our department for other uses -- usually on the high end hardware products... they seem to have more problems. Right now we just take them off the internet though, then it doesn't matter what SP is installed. :) _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I received the same error last week and chose to send the report. When the reporting was completed, I was directed to an MS download page that had a fix for the problem. I downloaded and installed it - no more trouble. I've tried to find the link on the MS site, but, up to this point, no luck. Maybe this is part of their new anti-piracy campaign?

I had the same problem on my Dell machine with preinstalled WinXP Pro, and also on my laptop (jeez, I can't remember the brand!), but the laptop XP Pro installation wasn't preinstalled. The problem may have been fixed by recent auto updates, because it seems to have gone away.
