I'm working up my formal requirements for a client in Word and I'm finally realizing the fonts in Word suck. So I thought that with the 4000+ members that are active here at any given time some might know of some *other* fonts that are good and appropriate for business documents like a specification of requirements. Please leave out the default fonts that come with Word 2003 after 10 years of using Microsoft products their fonts are lame. I love the fonts in Thunderbird... Wonder how I get them... Oh well, do you guys have a favorite font or some ideas on where to look? I would be willing to spend *some* money not *lots* but some for a decent font. So, what's your favorite font? P.S. - I have a cold, colds suck. My back hurts, my legs hurt and even my butt hurts.:omg: What's up with colds in 100 degree temperatures?:wtf: Isn't that like cheating or something?:~ I mean my gosh?:^) Winter ailments used to respect summer's domain!:sigh: Oh well... Guess it's time to bust out the Iron Maiden and turn it all the way up. Yeah, that sounds good. P.S.S. - Please rescue me from my boring fonts.:((

Well, I like boring, nice and readable. I have to switch glasses often enough now! :) code-frog wrote: good and appropriate for business documents like a specification of requirements. Well, who are your customers. If it is a major (i.e. old foggy conservative, like my place) company, it is likely that they have documented standards for items like requirements documents. So Arial, New Times Roman and for the less adventurous, Courier New! :-D I do not mind getting old. It beats all the other options that I can think of.

Well, there's always www.fonts.com[^], but for a business document, I'd go with either: a) a normal, staid and acceptable sans-serif typeface, probably from the Swiss family (any graphic designer will tell you the presentation of the message is part of the message) b) stick to your corporate standard (our standard font is 11pt Century Schoolbook, for example). The main reason why the typefaces in Word are there is because they are the standards - will your client really be expecting a formal document in a wacky typeface? Don't forget, changing from a standard typeface can make things really hard to read.

Being an artist type, I have literally thousands of fonts. I don't know what you're looking for, but here are some more "formal" fonts I use:

...and a couple of others that are a little more informal:

And then just for fun, a random sampling of fancy fonts:

Closest I've got is ZaphHumnst BT [top is Optima, bottom is Zaph]:

Not an exact match but fairly close. Zaph is thinner, and of course there are other minor differences, like the stem of the 'p'.

Jeffry J. Brickley wrote: complete font-lift to sans-serif Too bad. There's a reason novels are written with a serif font: they are easier to read. The serifs give your brain a LOT more visual recognition cues. I always go with sans-serif for headings and titles (the lack of serifs forces concentration on these parts of the text which is their intent) and serif fonts for the body of the document. Makes for a nice, easy read. Oh, and no more than two or three font/point size combinations per page. IMHO by removing simple reading barriers like poor font choices, the reader can concentrate on your exciting writing instead of struggling just to read it. Cheers, Drew.

I think that's true for printed text, but due to the much lower resolution of screens, sans-serif typefaces are easier if reading on the screen, so it probably depends on *how* the audience is going to read the document as well.

You'll have to send me your e-mail address. For some reason (probably the newsletter), I'm not getting the e-mail notifications.
