I love my iRiver. I have had it for 18 months now and have no battery or performance problems. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

Why not? I can love (agape) my neighbor without liking (phileo) him one bit. When Jesus commanded us to love our neighbor as ourselves, he was instructing us to agape them. Agape is the unconditional love for everybody that flows from one's character and, as such, has nothing to do with liking the receiver. I can say that I absolutely despise someone, and still love (agape) them.

Jumping in from Roger's thread above, this is one of those concepts that makes me wish i'd spent some time learning other languages - English at times seems to hamstring thought as well as speech.

Okay...regardless of whether or not you agree that Jesus told us to do this, you can't disagree with the interpretation of the greek words for love. The Greeks separated love into three words: agape, phileo, and eros. Agape is unconditional love that you have for everybody. It flows from your character and is dependent solely on you. Phileo is conditional, friendship love. You phileo your family, friends, etc. It's conditional...meaning that if someone pisses you off royally, they could lose that phileo you have for them. And then there's eros, which is a passionate desire-type of love. You would eros your wife, girlfriend, car, whatever you really want. These concepts aren't even "Christian"...the greeks were considered the gentiles (pagans) in the day of Christ. The fact is that their language separates the concept of love much clearer than English does. I'm sure there are other langauges that have a much more complete expression of love as well. So what exactly makes you so sick about this? [EDIT] And besides...there's no code in the Lounge...so we are keeping church and code separate. ;)

Right...but that interpretation assumes that Jesus was talking about Phileo-ing someone. Which he clearly was not. Agape is unconditional and flows from your character. If you have a stronger character, you will have more agape. The phileo love is conditional and would best be described as the friendship love. Christ didn't command us to like everybody on the face of the planet. That would be impossible. Are we supposed to like Hitler, Mussolini, Hussein, etc? No. But we do have agape love for them based solely on the fact that they're human.

Indeed. English seems to be lacking in a few areas. The idea of love happens to be one of them. The word love is so overused because it's the only thing that we can use to express a variety of separate topics. As I said, the greeks have three words for love: agape, phileo, and eros. And they separate out quite distinctly the various applications of "love". We really only have "love", but I guess you could throw in "like" too. Oh, and there's the ever-popular-with-the-high-school-crowd, "in love". And all three of those words are so similar and similarly abused that, to have any hope of interpreting what someone means when they use them, you need lots of explanation as to what the nature of the relationship is, what their intentions are, etc.
