People stealing gas from parked cars or cars stuck in traffic, on the other hand, is something I can't say I've ever seen in the US! :-)

I believe it is illegal for you to pump your own gas in New Jersey as well as Oregon. The generation of random numbers is too important to be left to chance.

If I am correct the state of Maine is also that way. And these states probably have these laws to give more jobs to the unemployed and too prevent people stealing gas.

I dont think self-service is going to come in India anytime sooner, or may be never. coz that takes away lot of jobs. plus cant trust most of the guys coming to fill up the car. They will run away without paying and plus tracing a car is really not too good here as most of the cars have registration number pointing to some non-existing address ( I do have one too ) Plus i dont like to get out of the car either.

Having seen the mess some people can make of something as simple as putting fuel in their cars, I wish we could ban some people from using self-service. I watched one woman recently who squeezed the trigger on a pump as she removed it from the island, and when the pump kicked in about a second later she managed to direct a stream of diesel all over the forecourt and up the side of her car. From the amount on the ground she must have had the pump on full. Yet she still proceeded to fill her tank, carefully shake off the pump, return it - this time with no leakage, went into the shop and paid, and left without telling the staff or wiping it from her car. I was not the only person left standing there throughout the whole thing looking on in disbelief. Of all the things to report, spilling that amount of diesel on the ground right next to a fuel island has got to be up there near the top! I've also witnessed a very near miss where the driver went in to pay for the fuel while the passenger filled up, the passenger got back in the car leaving the pump in the side and the driver returned, turned on the engine and moved forward a few inches before someone walking towards them frantically waived them to stop. I was in the passenger seat behind and I was only inches away from from hitting the horn. Judah Himango wrote: People stealing gas from parked cars I've seen that once, someone was filling their lawnmower up from a parked car. In broad daylight too! I've never heard of it being donw while a vehicle was stopped in traffic though.

Do you have unleaded gas in India? Because then it would be very dammagable for people serving gas! Unleaded gas contains bunzen which is known to be highly cancerigen and in europe many says that it is preferable that one person does not breath gas vapor all day long.

In college, I had the unfortunate event of someone siphoning my tank while I was in class. The offender was even brash enough to take my gas cap too. I know I wasn't empty cause I had filled up the day before. JERKS ;P Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

I think unleaded gas (petrol) is available in India from last 3-4 years.
