Microsoft And Hollywood[^] Just once I would like to see someone on the side of the consumer. I mean really you are going to shut off the video stream to my monitor if my hardware can not support the copy protection? I have been in several fights with friends over Microsoft because I believe in the technology and innovation they have brought to the PC but I gotta tell you no one is going to control me or my computer. Maybe the money I spend don’t mean much to a company like Microsoft and maybe they don’t care about me but if there is enough “me’s” in the world maybe they will start to care. I am done defending XP is a good OS and I will stay with it if that means no DVD’s on my computer then so be it. Anyone else? Will

Speaking for myself, i use the same technique as when i must reconcile my belief that humans are evil with the fact that i also am a human. Which is to say, i allow for some degree of choice in the matter - you and your Corp. may be rotten to the core, but you can choose to act otherwise.

Interesting view. I'm of the persuasion that there are some good people in the world, and neither are all corporations evil. Wanting to make money is not evil by itself, or we'd all be guilty. Doing immoral things in order to make money, OTOH, that would be evil.

Meh. You're gonna be able to play DVDs without quality degradation. You can play DVDs now, MS isn't stupid enough to think they could take that away. Now, those next-generation "SuperExtraSpecialBluBob'N'RayHiDephDVD"s will be effected. So what? Since when has High Definition Video been cheap? This is the price you pay for getting to play it on your computer. What, you'd rather they took the stance they took with DVDs? Where a fresh install of Windows won't even play them? Where the wrong combination of flakey DVD software and flakey video drivers not only will refuse to play the DVD, but will lock up or reboot?

Only those who use cracked versions will be able to play DVD's they bought. Just like those who buy copy-protected music CDs.

i didnt say anything was evil... please dont put words in my mouth ... i think most corporations put profit above all other considerations and measure any venture by its profit potential ... that is where i 100% disagree with them ... i happen to think that the environment and education and healthcare should not be profit centers... a civilised society should take care of the old and the sick and the children and it should cherish the environment and to answer dnh ... there is no such thing as a non-profit corporation ... there are non-profit organizations and they are generally a good thing

The thing is... how far removed from the immoral things do you have to be before you can stop considering yourself tainted by them? Sure, it's easy to cry "Evil!" at the guy making the decision to (say) replace a healthy ingredient with a cheaper (but less-than-healthy) one, or use cheap paint on a contract that won't be renewed, or cut quality control... but what about the shareholders pressuring that guy to increase profits, with no thought to the consequences? What about the laborers actually producing shoddy work, simply because it's easier and no-one seems to care? What about the people buying the products, or the politicians picking the lowest bidder in spite of a sketchy track record? What about the voters, who voted in the guy who said he would cut taxes instead of the guy who said he would build better schools? Corporations are all too often just a mental game. A way of blaming someone else for your own weakness, your own greed. They are the manifestation of a culture of lust and cowardice. Also, some manufacture damn good airconditioners. Guess which one of those paragraphs i'll put on my resume...

lauren, your "biz stuff" link needs a .COM in it, I think. As it is, the link doesn't work. I have to agree with your basic sentiments, but I do think there are some companies (corporations) which do put a priority on the things you mention. Good luck to you.
