Not sure about DSL but I have a cable modem that I have running all the time for 44.95 a month. However it cost me 0.00 a month as I can expense it to the company I work for :) 36.00 a month for DSL sounds right.
We shouldn't assume something's debugged just because everyone in the whole world has access to the source code.

I just changed my plan. Intially, my DSL and phone service were separate plans through SBC. I was paying $39.95 per month for 384 Kb/Sec DLS and $49.99 per month for local phone service. However, I recently change my plan and got a big discount. They upgraded me to 1280 Kb/Sec and unlimited nationwide calling (no long distance) for $79.99. I think it's a pretty good deal. I get faster DSL, unlimited calling, and no long distance for $10 less per month than I was paying. Regards, Brigg Thorp Senior Software Engineer Timex Corporation

The next dummy question is: what is the max DSL and Cable speed? And the costs? I mean as far as you know. The companies serving my city (Milan, Italy) make prices like 30 € per month for always-on Internet access (phone excluded) at 4 or 6 MBit/s. Usually we pay the phone usage separately, but there are some offers like 10 € for unlimited national calls, but only if you buy DSL access to the same company!

I pay ~30$CAD (25USD) per month for DSL 3Mb/s, Unlimited bandwidth usage. Try to negociate. I succeeded to drop the price from 44.95 $CAD + 10$ CAD modem rental to 29.95$CAD without paying for the modem rental ;P I think the guys from Bell don't want to loose their customers.

First of all, my service (SBC) is in affiliation with Yahoo, so I think it brings the prices down. When I first started using DSL (1999), it was with the local Connecticut SNET company. SNET was bought out by SBC, then SBC began its affilitation with Yahoo in 2003. As far as max speeds, this is what they offer now. Please note that there is no bandwidth charge - everything is unlimited:
384Kbps - 1.5Mbps (download)
128Kbps - 384Kbps (upload)
$19.95 per month (without SBC long distance)
14.95 per month (with SBC long distance)1.5Mbps - 3.0Mbps (download)
384Kbps - 512Kbps (upload)
$29.99 per month (without SBC long distance)
24.99 per month (with SBC long distance)I think they only offer it now with telephone service. I don't think you can get just DSL. So anyone who wants this service would have to pay the extra for whatever phone plan was desired. Here is the information page where I got the above figures: SBC Connecticut DSL rates[^] Regards, Brigg Thorp Senior Software Engineer Timex Corporation

I can't get it, so it's cost is irrelevant. stuck with dialup (at 28000 baud).:sigh:

PJ Arends wrote: stuck with dialup (at 28000 baud). Ouch! I'm using a GPRS (cell phone) connection on my laptop when I'm out in the mountains, and that's just when you notice the difference. I still remember the days when I only had 33.6kbps dial-up at home, and 64kbps ISDN dial-up in the office - it didn't seem to be as slow at the time. :) Officially, GPRS should be up to 40kbits/s or so, but I think in areas with weaker signal it is somewhere around 10 to 20kbit/s. Another problem is that you pay for every kbyte you transfer with GPRS, and the price for 1Mbyte is about $1.15! I couldn't believe how easily one transfers several megabytes in just a few moments before I installed a traffic monitor. :) Rado

I've been seriously considering switching from my Satillite system (Starband)to SBC DSL. You seem to be happy with it. How does it compare to the cable systems? Have you had connection problems, support, service problems, etc? "Capitalism is the source of all true freedom."

I'm not sure as I'm not using DSL myself, but I think the prices start somewhere around $30/mo here in Slovakia, this could be for a 512k line. Of course, you would pay more for a faster line, flat rate, or other extras. Wireless (WiFi) connections are very popular here, and the prices for these usually start somewhere around $15/mo. Rado PS: Not America nor Australia, I know. ;)

I live in Windsor, Ontario (Canada) and I pay $CAN 44.95 (approx 30 Euros) for 5Mbps. I use Cable and DSL here has the same price. For 300 Kbps the price is $CAN 29.95 (20 Euros). The maximum you could buy is 10Mbps $CAN 69.95 (48 Euros). But you also have upload/download bit caps, email space, webspace, free security services, etc. For 5Mbps you get 15Gb upload/download, 100 Mb of email space, 10 Mb of webspace, 7 email addresses, and 3 IP addresses. For 10Mbps you get everything mentioned above, plus 30Gb of upload/download. Dario Solera wrote: [ITA] Tozzi ha ragione: Gaia si sta liberando di noi. [ENG] Tozzi is right: Gaia is obliterating us. Just a suggestion...I believe that a closer English interpretation of "Gaia si sta liberando di noi" would be "Gaia is getting rid of us". I heard on the radio today that DSL high speed with MTS is 29.95 for the first 12 months... Shaw high speed cable is about $35.00/Month... For the last 4 years or so we've had MTS and Shaw battle for our business which has resulted in much cheaper internet, but constantly changing email addresses :) Cheers :) It's frustrating being a genius and living the life of a moron!!!
