Any mention of politics, especially critiques of well-known political figures, is better suited for the soapbox. :suss:

Sure, but it also says: The Lounge is rated PG. If you're about to post something you wouldn't want your kid sister to read then don't post it. And most political discussions may go into the direction where I don't want my kid sister to read. Signature The only valid use of the BLINK tag:

Edbert P. wrote: discussing politics in the Lounge to me seems like showing an MA+ program at 8.00AM in the morning instead of children's cartoon Good point. I feel that an alternative to meaningless drivvel is important and should be presented so that there are alternatives to what some people think is appropriate for a particular forum or timeslot; provided it is presented in a way that is not offensive to the usual participants, i.e., (in this case) "kid sister". To say that only mindless matter should be discussed on the lounge is offensive to me and violates the basic tennet of the lounge as being a place to "discuss things that don't quite fit elsewhere". If I want a discussion I will go to the lounge and if to rant I will go to the soapbox. When the "thought police" are allowed to dictate what is objectionable or proper for discussion on the lounge we all are deprived of an opportunity to learn from the diverse group of people, with varying opinions I might add, who, for the most part, post reasoned arguments. Well, I can't say that I disagree with you. In fact, I don't mind having a few political discussions (and other mature-themed discussions), but a few weeks ago (even until now) there had been several discussions in the Lounge that heated up into rants (at least IMO). Therefore I'd rather have a potentially escalating exploding discussion (i.e. politics, religion) in the Soapbox, not to mention that there is the benefit that you can express your opinions more freely in that area (no kid-sister rule). There are no "thought police" in CP, but if all I see in the Lounge is politics then I'd much rather go to the ASP/SQL/C# forums :). I expect the Lounge to be a place for me to laze about and perhaps check some interesting POTD, JOTD, FOTD links. Signature The only valid use of the BLINK tag:

I'm with you on this. If I wish to have a political or other chat about some matter. Fine. However I can't understand why somone else who does not agree with my views then needs to take the arguement to a pesonal level. - If on the other hand I use hate speech (or writing), I really am setting myself up by inciting those who have various sensitivities. - What is worrying is that so many CPians and others in the broader community can not differentiate from the two. - Anyhow say what you like in the lounge without fear of offending me. It is just something that over the years we have come to a mutual agreement on. People come to the Lounge to mainly relax. Having that spoiled by heated and far-ranging political or religious topics is not relaxing. So as a courtesy we discuss difficult topics in the Soapbox. The same goes for sports events :-D regards, Paul Watson South Africa Colib and WebTwoZero. K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

ColinDavies wrote: However I can't understand why somone else who does not agree with my views then needs to take the arguement to a pesonal level. I have seen this also. In my opinion it is they lack the imagination to discuss controversial topics on their merits and need to "retaliate" with a personal attack when they disagree with your opinion. Don't take it personally, it is them who are showing how little they know or how prejudiced they are. ColinDavies wrote: If on the other hand I use hate speech (or writing), I really am setting myself up by inciting those who have various sensitivities. Hateful speech or writing is like the person who lacks the vocabulary to frame their ideas in a properly constructed sentence and injects a curse every other word as if that clarifies what they are trying to say. ColinDavies wrote: What is worrying is that so many CPians and others in the broader community can not differentiate from the two. Reading and reading with comprehension are two different things. Too many people will read something and not take the time to consider what the other person is trying to say. What really gets to me is when someone will mock people for their grammar when they are trying to converse in a language other than their native tongue. I would like to challenge those people to converse in the other person’s native language but then I would be getting into a discussion with someone of limited imagination and verifiably low communication skills. Having that spoiled by heated and far-ranging political or religious topics is not relaxing. I can understand that if you want to relax you do not want to get involved in a controversial subject but then all you need to do is pass on reading that discussion thread and go on the JOTD, POTD, Liverpool vs Jo'burg, etc. That is what subject lines are for; to alert you to the content of the discussion. I regularly pass on the opportunity to read the discussion of the latest sporting event but that doesn't mean that I think you should take it to the soapbox. I just skip to the next discussion without giving it a second thought. It doesn't even detract from my lounge experience as I do not get drawn into a discussion that holds no interest to me personally. My point is not that everyone should read and contribute to every discussion but that it is not anyone’s place to say that a particular topic is not worthy of consideration by people here in the lounge and that you should take your rant to where the other ranters (the stated purpose of the soapbox is a place to rant) frequent. That is an elitist and condescending and attitude. Please do as I do when presented with an offensive subject and just move on to the next discussion without opening the thread or giving it a second thought. If, on the other hand, you get drawn in and feel compelled to read, and possibly contribute to, the discussions then you have only yourself to blame for ruining your relaxing lounge experience. I am not trying to offend you but please do not become the "subject police" guarding the lounge from interlopers who do not know the sensibilities of the local loungers. P.S. – I know it is easy to pass on a sports discussion but not as easy to pass on a political discussion.:-D It will take some dicipline.:sigh: I'm on-line therefore I am. JimmyRopes
