I was just reading on http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista\_editions.asp that the Home Basic Edition of Vista will not support the Aero user interface. Has anyone else heard about this?

Remember, Aero is something nobody has seen yet. It debuts in beta 2. The current interface is all Avalon (Windows Presentation Foundation).

OK then I need a sit-down-and-explain session with someone who uses smaller words, please. Does Aero go ontop of WPF and provide the whole 3D side? regards, Paul Watson South Africa Colib and WebTwoZero. K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

AERO is an acronym for Authentic, Energetic, Reflective, and Open - which is the "theme" that Microsoft have for their new product. Aero is also the code name for the new UI look and feel of the shell. Aero is built upon the WPF. I'm a little puzzled how any versions of Vista can not have the Aero look and feel. As it was supposed to be the default, never to be removed look. (Unlike XP which allows you to look like Win 2k) Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

No no no. Aero != The "Aero Glass Theme" that you can select in Vista Beta 1 (or the PDC CTP) right now. Aero is a much cooler thing that was only partially showed off in the PDC demo builds (Vista build 4229). The video on C9, here, shows off some more of the Aero features. Aero is basically a new DirectX-based, 3D Windows Desktop Manager. It's got a new compositing engine, rendering pipeline, etc. The constant mantra of the Microsoft people has been "Wait 'till Beta 2". They keep claiming that the current shell and the current "Aero glass" theme is just a placeholder for the true Aero that's coming up Real Soon Now. So...more to come.

I assumed that the engine below WPF was the Direct-X based engine and that Aero would sit onto of that as a 'skin' (for the want of a better word.) I thought we'd already seen the Aero engine at work but not seen the full power of what it can do. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

I'd imagine it will use Uxtheme.dll/ComCtl6 (XP themes) or ComCtl5 (for the ugly so-called "classic" look. Coupled with a product version structure that makes it utterly confusing as to what version of the product fits my requirements, again in terms of somebody else's twisted view of what makes me productive. I'd be very curious to actually understand the rational for having 7 different versions. Maybe it's just a red herring, but actually I think they are struggling with several opposing forces: 1) figuring out how to sell Vista to businesses that are happy with XP or 2003 2) figuring out how to sell Vista to new end users (that's the eye candy and multimedia version) 3) figuring out how to install Vista on older hardware 4) making the versions sufficiently distinctive to coerce the user/business to upgrade/replace the workstation 5) figuring out how to make Vista attractive for third party vendors 5a) so vendors can rape us for similarly tiered software 5b) so vendors can have some hope of having their software run regardless of what Vista thinks it should be doing based on the hardware of the machine The problem is, Vista isn't an OS anymore. It's more a house of cards (vector graphics, albeit) on which applications are dogpiled on top of. If the DOJ ever gets a spine (not that we want them to, of course), they could have a field day with how the Microsoft applications leverage Vista in ways that no third party vendor would ever know how to do. So what happens to apps on Windows Vista 3rd World Edition that make use of AERO? Does someone upgrading from Windows Vista Home to Windows Home Pro find a very different interface to work with? And are the UX guidelines for AERO or for WPF? Surely a guideline driven thing should be made available across all Windows Vista versions? Like HIC (only actually followed.) regards, Paul Watson South Africa Colib and WebTwoZero. I can appreciate how difficult it is to use a hand-held video camera, but sheesh - balance it on the dude's head or something. This is just nauseating...
