You would be surprised at the number of Americans who know absolutely nothing about New York. I've lived my entire life in the US and have never been anywhere near New York and have no desire to go. In fact, my family has lived in North American for the better part of three centuries, and I don't think any of them have ever been to New York. By and large, however, Americans are a very tolerant, open minded, friendly and hospitable people, so I'm sure you would do well wherever you might decide to settle. New York is a great city, but finding a decent place to live is not easy, and it's very expensive. The first thing you need to figure out is how to get here. If you want to work, you have to find a job here first with a company that will sponsor you for a visa. If you want to study you have to be accepted by a University first and get a student visa. If you are independently wealthy and just want to tool around it depends a lot on where you're from and who you are as far as getting a tourist visa. People who want to come here and take flight lessons and then fly planes into buildings seem to have no problems getting a visa of about any kind. On the other hand, if a Russian woman marries an American man, and Babushka just wants to visit for a few weeks to see her own grandchildren, it's totally out of the question. Hell will freeze over before BIC will give her a lousy tourist visa...
