I got my car insurance renewal quote in the other day and since some details have changed I had to call them to update it. I'm now taking a break from work (although on the lookout for contract or freelance work) so I told them I was unemployed. To my surprise my insurance quote went up by £40. How exactly does being unemployed put you at a higher risk of claiming on your car insurance? I would have thought it would be the opposite, what with not commuting during rush hour and generally travelling less miles. SuzyB If I had a better memory I would remember more.

It is also possible that when they did your new quote, you were quoted on a different rate date with higher rates. It happens quite frequently. It also depends on what mood the underwriter was in that day. Car insurance isn't that highly regulated so underwriters have some leeway to play with the numbers. Brett A. It's all statistics; actuary tables very likely show that the unemployed have a higher accident rate than the employed. (My own guess is that while the unemployed aren't commuting, they are running more errands during the day and short trips are when most accidents happen.) This is close to what happens, though the insurance companies simplify it by just looking at your credit score. Being unemployed (you really aren't, you're taking a long vacation, right?), your credit score probably went down. On a related note - rather than just accept the renewal quote, find out what they'd quote you as a new customer & insist on getting that. I did that at my last renewal and ended up paying £100 less than the renewal quote. It's easy enough to do with on-line application systems...
