Yeah, autorickshaw rules! I remember we used it couple of years ago to travel to and from the office in Pondicherry. We used hotel's taxi originally, but somehow taxi drivers didn't took us serious enought and either arrived too late, or sat all day in the lobby and expect us to pay them for "sitting and waiting". One evening, after the taxi didn't come for 15 minutes after appointment time we grabbed the first thing that moved and looked like it wanted to transport "something" - autorickshaw. The funny thing was that the taxi arrived just as we got in the vehicle. Well, we waved "bye-bye-you-are-too-late" to the taxi driver and went on with the 3-wheeler. ;) It was the best decision we could make. We talked to the driver and he was regularly comming at the hotel and at the office at the exact time we told him. He was happy getting the money and we were happy getting everywhere on time ;) All in all, for short trips in the city it's much better than a cab. If anybody will travel in India I strongly advice to forget about the taxis and use 3-wheeler. Use the taxi's for long trips only...

I travelled in something which could be what you described. That was in Bangkok, but they call it a 'tuk-tuk', and the only thing you can enjoy when you're aboard is the nice smell of the exhausting pipe gaz of other cars !! Jerome

Its a tricycle usually moved by pedalling ! Can you imagine, a person pedalling and pulling a rickshaw with a seating capacity of 3 to 4 ! Use the taxi's for long trips only... Yeah, thats a really good tip ! Then, there are certain cities in India like Mumbai[former Bombai], where taxis are more popular. Its almost impossible to hire an auto [thats how we refer to an autorickshaw in short]. But there the taxis are almost as good as autos. In my place, Trivandrum autos are popular. There is an autorickshaw stand in every junction. And there is a very strong autorickshaw drivers' union here. Whenever they go on strike, life becomes miserable ! I've never travelled in one, but do I get my multicultural awareness badge 'cause I knew what one was? That's what cheap (quality) British holiday programs do to you. ________________ David Wulff http://www.davidwulff.co.uk Sonork ID: 100.9977 Dave, CPUA: 0x0b0b Contents of my clipboard: Barclays Visa Connect - 4936-3503-2 -- sh*t, I'd better edit the rest out...

Can't say as I have travelled in an autorickshaw, but we almost ran one over in a taxi. I guess we felt like driving around Kolkata in a taxi was adventurous enough :-) Maybe next time... :-) Regards, Dan
