Something VERY Interesting........... Do try this out. An Indian discovered that nobody can create a folder anywhere named as "con" This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable... At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened! Try it out yourself... Sreejith Nair [ My Articles ]

Looks like most of you script-kiddies were not around to enjoy the heady days of DOS and all tham thar reserved words. Try typing this into a command window: copy con iamamoron.txt[ENTER] do not pass on chain mail [CTRL-Z] You should now have a nice wee text file to play with.

What a foolish post, are you trying to make all Indians fools in front of the whole world. We need a baby's forum too here. Few days ago one of my friend whom I believed to be intelligent asked me the same question, and I was suprised that people don't know that much, just a basic MSDN search would be able to give answer to such basic questions. http://www.priyank.in/

If you know how!  You cannot use Explorer to do it, so if this person only tried using Explorer, and not via the command prompt or via the APIs directly, they did sloppy work.    Using reserved (device) names like NUL, CON, CLOCK$, AUX, etc. is how many FXP-ers tag and upload unwanted content to an open FTP server.    And yes, MS does know why this is.    Peace! -=- James

I've managed, programmatically, to create a folder :- z:\test\my file.. - The two periods at the end of the folder now prevent me from deleting and I can't delete it in the same manner it was created! Any ideas anyone? ********************************************* The sooner you fall behind, the longer you have to catch up.

The names con, prn, com1, com2, lpt1, lpt2, aux and nul are reserved for devices (console, printer, serial ports). This is very standard in the Microsoft world, so the statement “At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened” is stupid. I just got this message in an email from a friend, the rumour is spreading like a great discovery. So stupid.

An Indian discovered that nobody can create a folder anywhere named as "con" This is something pretty cool...and unbelievable... At Microsoft the whole Team, including Bill Gates, couldn't answer why this happened! Try it out yourself... A couple of weeks ago I discovered that you cannot create a username Con under Windows XP. I was going to post this as a FYI post the way I usually do when I run into a gotcha like this to save others from running into the same problem. Unfortunately I have been working ridiculously long hours and haven't gotten around to it yet. I had the problem after reinstalling the OS onto a BenQ Joybook S72 (or something to that effect) from the CD's after the quickfix partition was stuffed and the end user couldn't figure it. After telling Windows XP the username was Con (didn't know his last name from memory) it kept telling me it couldn't create a profile and was using a temporary one. After much nashing of teeth and searching the internet I found an article like this one[^] that tells me CON is a reserved word. Changed the username to Con K and no more problems. Michael Martin Australia "I controlled my laughter and simple said "No,I am very busy,so I can't write any code for you". The moment they heard this all the smiling face turned into a sad looking face and one of them farted. So i had to leave the place as soon as possible." - Mr.Prakash 24/04/2004

I would imagine the reason that you can't have a username of CON or any of the other device names is due to the profile path, which includes the username (C:\Documents and Settings\_username_\...). Amazing how those little bits of MS-DOS keep hanging on .
