Since college I've used an electric razor; at various times I tried using two blade razors, but they hacked up my face. Three years ago, I tried a Gillette Mach 3 and was very impressed. Lately, I've found my electric razor is so annoying, that I've been using my Mach 3 more. Enough that I need to buy a new handle. I'm considering the Schick Quattro, another Mach 3, the M3Power or maybe even hold out for Gillette's latest 5 blade masterpiece. Any recommendations? (no electric or, shudder, straight razor, suggestions please. Disposables are out too; I hate shaving and am willing to pay extra for the most comfortable, closest, shave I can get.) PS. My one complaint about the Mach 3 is that the blades get clogged easily. Maybe it's because my whiskers are really wimpy--if I try to grow a beard I look like a mutant. (An argument could be made that I already look like a mutant, in which case I should say "more like...". In any event my wife likes how I look or at least pretends she does.) Well next to a straight razor the most comfortable and probably closest shave is with a quality electric shaver - which you state that you don't want. I have a moustache and a large goatee type beard. I have to shave portions of my face and its delicate work. I use a quality electric shaver with a pop up trimmer . Works just fine for me. Schick Quatro is my weapon of choice in the morning stubble battle. Doesn't seem to clog much and when it does I wash it out easily enough by tapping in on the sink bottom while squirting a jet of water into the back of the blade (thumb over the faucet to produce the jet) My ultra-sonic electric toothbrush cleans out razor clogs nicely too but then I get whiskers in my teeth. ;) Steve T

I used a "traditional" Oral-B electric toothbrush and I can tell it's much better than regular toothbrush, but when I saw an ultra-sonic toothbrush I couldn't help thinking it's another marketing gimmick. I've used both the Mach 3 and the Quattro. Stay with the Mach 3. Better design and easier to use. The Quattro, IMHO, is overkill and cumbersome. My experience with the Mach 3 differs from yours. I find it very easy to rinse it out. -Sean ---- Shag a Lizard

They take a bit of getting used to, but they work very well once you have built up a tollerance for the feeling of the vibrating bristles diggng in behind the gingiva. (which is the way you are supposed to use them according to my dentist) One of my friends tried and one couldn't take it. Steve T

I use a Mach 3 Turbo and it gives me the best shave of any I have tried. I have never had a problem with blades clogging. The only complaint I have is the cost of the blades, however they do seem to hold their edge twice as long as the Trac II's I used to buy. I haven't tried any of the other blades you mentioned. I do use my wife's Norelco when I am in a hurry. She only complains if I forget to empty the stubble out of the shaving head. 5 blades :omg: I thought 3 blades was obscene, what will they cost? I think the multi-blade thing is only a gimmic. I remember the ads when the double blades first came out (yes, I must be getting old!) where they would show a magnified animation of what the two blads supposedly do: The first one grips the hair and pulls it up a bit, then the second one comes along and nips it right at the bud. Yeah right. Pure marketing schlock. Look at the blades and try to visualize what really happens. It is more likely that all you are doing is scrapping your face with two blades with no special coordination between them, which is probably less efficient and more painful since it just means more friction. I think I'll just try growing a beard for a while... Matt Gerrans

Agreed. I don't like shaving (twice a week max), so the stubble gets quite tough. M3Power is a nice razor (the vibration is wierd at first, and kinda numbing). And I recommend the following which leaves me with very few blood-spots - King Of Shaves oil over the wet stubble, then a decent shaving gel on top. Then leave it for a minute or two before actually shaving, as it will help soften the hair. Either that or grow a beard.

It's absolutely hands down the best razor I've ever owned and it's really nice to shave every day with a completely clean, sanitized razor. FWIW after reading through the forums on those pages I've come to learn that most problems men have with shaving are not really related to the brand of razor but more the technique and how much they maintain their razor like were supposed to. Which is why I bought the braun, I don't need to do anything for maintenance as it's all automatic and I'm far too lazy to oil the thing, clean it out etc etc.

I meant "no electric" because I already have one. It's a Remmington and does a pretty good job, just takes too long (about 15 minutes if I've let my whiskers grow for three or four days, which is typical. By contrast, with my Mach 3, I can shave in about 3 minutes and it will be smoother.) I previously owned a Braun, I really liked. Unfortunately, it was falling apart and they stopped selling the blades and screens for it. When I looked around for a replacement, everyone said to avoid the cheap Brauns; they aren't what they used to be. I seriously debated buying the 8595, but it was very expensive.
