A 3rd worlder's reality check

Plenty of people from developing countries make it to the USA. You just need concrete goals, a plan, a few tricks, and some luck. I have one friend who is a cook. He went from Shanghai to Japan, and then to New Jersey, USA. He just bought a nice 3 bedroom house. Another guy I know came from the countryside of rural China, with at most a highschool educhation. He "fell of the boat" when it was in New York and spent a few years doing odd jobs off the books until he was able to get a green card. He now has a thriving business installing satellite dishes and alarm systems.

The India culture has always puzzled me. On one hand your people seam to detest the cast system I percieve you have and from your comments is at least partially true. But, I knew 2 students from India when I was in school (yes many years ago). I do not know how well off their families were but they had gotten to the US to go to school and were then working part time jobs to pay for their education. In both cases they wanted only to live and work here long enough so they could then return to India and buy a city so they could become the lords over the land. I did not understand and still do not. Sorry for digressing. If nothing else you have joined the international community here and I for one appreciate the interaction from more that jsut my fellow US citizens. Again good luck. Mike

It is true that I would have been happier to have been born there. But now I dont think I'd be happy there either. But the computer world is an american thing basically. If I am to be successful, I'd need to spend at least 4 years there and then come back with several contracts. Then from india, I'd be earning US money. you could experience the wonderful feeling of being laid off because the economy is in the gutter... :( you could experience the joy of competing with your friends for the few (lousy) jobs that are out there. -c

Everyone dreams. Everyone. Even someone as pitiable and scornful as a 3rd wordler. I dream too. Dreaming is easy. Then what is it that separates a few. That makes some people stand out. Well that’s something too. Its called realization of dreams. Will I realize my dreams? Will I ever achieve what I wanted to achieve ever since I was old enough to say my name? Or will I suffer the same fate as any other 3rd worlder? I know some Indians are successful in life. But these are the elite and rich upper class. They have the money power to get them out of India. What about me? I can imagine myself born in a developed place. I believe that if I was born in some computer aware place, say SF, I’d have conquered my dreams by now. I’d have got an exposure which is only fantasy now to me. I’d have been rich and successful and contended. Why has fortune been cruel to me? It’s particularly painful to me. Simply because I was not destined thus, to be a piece of crap in a world of nothingness. But there is hope, as is always so. I don’t remember who it was who said that, but to hope is to live.
