P2T

P2T or PTT as in "Push to talk" seems to really catching on here in NZ. I just signed up my family of 4 for 40$ NZ or about 30US a month. It almost seems to good to be true in some ways, I feel like they will lift the charges in the future. Is it catching on elsewhere in the world ? If you don't know what I'm talking about P2T makes your cellphone behave like a 2-Way or walkie-talkie device. Thus while only one person at a time can talk, you can talk to 5 people simultaneously. (5 is on the system I'm on) Regardz Colin J Davies The most LinkedIn CPian (that I know of anyhow) :-)

Yeah - it's really good. You get to hear: *SCZZHHZZT* WHERE ARE YOU?? OVER! *SCZZHHZZT* *beep-oop* *SCZZHHZZT* I'M RIGHT NEXT TO YOU *SCZZHHZZT* *beep-oop* *SCZZHHZZT* RIGHT! THANKS! *SCZZHHZZT* It's especially endearing in enclosed, public places, quiet cafes, movie theatres and while standing next to someone at the store. Who ever came up with that bright idea should be hung, drawn and quartered. cheers, Chris Maunder

Yeah, have had mine for about 4 years now. You quickly learn to use it properly though. You first alert the other person that you want to talk to them, but say nothing. You let them respond back first as they may be in an area where they can't talk, or else you get the kind of thing Chris mentioned.

Nextel was the first to have this and I hate it. I can't wait to switch carriers. I don't care if it is an option I won't get it.
Found on Bash.org [erno] hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

Totally agree, though hearing both sides of the conversation is better than hearing only one, isn't it? :^) On the bright side you could post overheard conversations to Overheard in New York[^], if you live in NYC :) Gary Marc Clifton: "In other words, VB is like a bad parent. What's better than having to listen to one side of a cell phone conversation in a store or restaurant? Having to listen to both sides of the conversation! Seriously, I've never quite understood one of Nextel's commercials about P2T. The commercials asks "Would you rather have this..." and you hear a phone ringing, then going to voice mail, "or this..." and you hear someone do that little bleep noise and the guy answers and everyone is happy. Basically they are saying you get in touch with someone instantly and don't "miss" them. But if I can't answer my cell phone, making you go to voice mail; chances are I'm not going to be able to answer your little bleep blip thing either. And can you just call someone and start talking? That would be very annoying. Jeff Martin My Blog

Maybe something different is our circumstances. The people who are really important to me are my family and so those are the only ones I give my number out to. I'm asked for my number probably daily in the business world, and I never give out my number, this is because I don't want to be available 24/7 to everyone. But if my kids or wife etc have a crisis I wish to be there for them. Regardz Colin J Davies The most LinkedIn CPian (that I know of anyhow) :-)
