What were you before?

A: So what were you before you became a programmer? B: What would you be if you could go back and do it again? --- I was basically a student. Life had totally bottomed out and brought me back to school. If I could go back and do it again I'd go into Pediatric Surgery and specialize in the stuff that would help my middle child the most. Not only that it's pretty fascinating and nobody is really doing it. I love programming and there'd be now way to get me away from that. But understanding my kids health better would be nice. I'd still code though. Just kinda have to do that. - Rex Yes, I've been up all night. :sigh:

Degree Student (Applied Statistics - just how useful hasn't that been! :) ) Then worked in a mill that produced wire of all shapes and sizes while trying to find a job. 9 months later I stumbled into programming That was 20 years ago and here I remain. If I had my time again I would have trained to be a plumber and never be short of work again. I still remember having to write your own code in FORTRAN rather than be a cut and paste merchant being pampered by colour coded Intellisense - ahh proper programming - those were the days :)

My first love was with hardware, but hardware was very expensive for a 12 year old.

I think a choice of career is less relevant than some of the other stupid decisions I've made in my life. But in the final analysis, I'm happy and content with those choices. They were stupid, but they are in the past. Now if I could just learn from the past! And I thought this was going to be a "previous life" question! I never really had any friends when I was in gradeschool/highschool so I spent a lot of time on the computer. I tinkered around always wanting to create something that lead me into html creation but it just didn't spark me. Eventually i procured a Visual Studio 6 C++ Introductory Edition and then sometime near the beginning of May 2001 I stumbled on this website that was orange and running on windows boxes and was full of C++ related articles. Then in around 2002 in college I met a guy named Scott, he was a Microsoft Student Ambassador and he introduced me to the "new thing" of the time C# and .NET and things went from there. He graduated and nominated me to be a Student Ambassador and well the rest is as they say... History. [EDIT]If I could choose something else I probably wouldn't. I work as a manager in a grocery store to pay for college while I am attending and believe me programming is a lot more fun![/EDIT] Matt Newman

A) I was an economy student. B) I'd finish my economy BSc and then switch to programming :D But seeing how much I've learned about myself, people and companies - I'd shudder to think what I'd do without that experience today. It has enabled me to handle many situations in a much differnt manner then many of my peers - which is visible at work; when I was in school; and when I talk with a programmer friend of mine, I've known since high-school. But I thought I was going to be an economist, but I found it was boring and something that I shouldn't spend my life on, but still - "quitting" after 2 years of a 3 year education might be ... well, I could have done that better. --------------------------- 127.0.0.1 - Sweet 127.0.0.1 -- modified at 9:58 Monday 24th October, 2005

I think I was always (or at least always wanted to be) a programmer. I cannot remember ever wanting to be a fireman, cop, weatherman, etc. I got my first computer when I was about 8 and never looked back.

A. I was in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman (medic), then I went to X-Ray Technician school. I spent my active duty time working in hospitals, mainly doing advanced X-Ray such as IVP's and Ultrasounds. After active duty, I was a reservist working with a Marine Corps infantry unit as a battelfield medic for a few years, and was then put on active duty by Bush #1 for Desert Storm in 1990. B. I went into the military because I slacked off in high school, so I couldn't get into a good college. I would definitely have payed attention in high school so I could have went to college in 1986 instead of 1991 like I did. I probably still would have went into the computer field since I was playing with computers since the Atari 800 came out in the early 1980's.
