For the last week I have been having some pretty serious headaches. Because I have been sniffling around I thought it was just a cold. I finally went to the doctor yesterday and I found out my blood pressure is way to high for my age. Since both sides of my family have blood pressure problems, I have to take medication. I slightly overweight but I am not obese and my doctor told me my blood pressure was not as sensitive to weight as some other people. So the only solution to get my BP down is to take medication. I am 22 years old and I already have to take Blood Pressure pills like my grandma. This really sucks. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

      1. Lower your stress level (excercise helps, and don't hate your family tree, be grateful you're not blind, have three hands, etc.).
      2. Excercise and keep a healthy, strong heart (you can be thin and have a weak heart.
      3. Lower your cholesterol (eat least cholesterol and saturated fats [solid at room temp], eat more wheats and grains).

Now you may have some other issues that are causing the BP, but you need to remove every other factor possible that will make the situation worse than it already is. Give you're heart a break because it's going to need it if it's already being overworked by the age of 22. Jeremy Falcon

I've been on Enalapril (an ACE Inhibitor) for 5 years now. Its no big deal. Be thankful for modern science that it provides such medication because without it you could be in an early grave.

Warning--rantish reply. Well, if I were told that at age 22 I would look at what alternatives there are. I know one thing--doctors are little better than street pushers. The "oh, you have so many degrees and so many years of schooling and you look so smart in that white lab coat so I will simply turn my brain off and bow to your infinite wisdom" doesn't fly with me. I prefer to do research and look at alternatives rather than make some pharmaceutical company rich while I suffer god knows what side effects anywhere from 2 weeks to 10 years down the road. Get a second opinion! So many docs want to dish out medication right away.

I would tend to agree with both you and Marc but I have been going to this Doc for years and he hasn't let me down before. Its all pretty confusing. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

That's the bad doctors. Too bad they are as common as bad developers...

You know... My middle child has some pretty tough medical issues to deal with. Some of them modern medicine doesn't have an answer for. But I'll tell you what. As her father I got involved. I learned all there was to learn about her condition. I've had my hands in her blood (That sounds morbid, it wasn't. I've saved this kids life several times.) I've been there and done it all. This kid is alive because I got/get involved. I don't take anything a doctor says at face value, not because I don't trust them, I DO IMPLICITLY. If people don't trust doctors they need to find better ones and that's the end of that subject. When I hear you say, "It's all pretty confusing." I'm thinking to myself. Hell yes! It's confusing! I'm saying to you take the confusion out of it. Here's what I would do in your shoes and it's what I do every time I get new information/diagnosis on my daughter. 1. I'm 22 years old. I have a history of blood pressure problems. You are prescribing this medication. I'm cool with taking the meds. What else can I do to get control of this? 2. What foods would you recommend I eat more of? 3. What foods would you recommend I avoid? 4. Is it safe for me to exercise? How about strenous exercise? 5. I don't feel like I have a lot of stress. Is stress a factor? If so how do I find out if I'm being affected by it? 6. Is there a 1 month, 6 month, 1 year or more plan we can put together *now* to get me off this medication and get my body to regulate pressure correctly on it's own? 7. What other concerns are there? Should I be watching for other things? I guarantee that if you take this on head-to-head and get answers you're going to feel better. You might still be on medication but you'll know that exhausted the medical resources and asked all the right questions. You'll also understand your condition and know how to moderate it. No part of life is about auto-pilot and this isn't either. Get involved and get informed. You *WILL* sleep better at night knowing that you've done what you can. - Rex
