Got two copies today. "Art doesn't want to be familiar. It wants to astonish us. Or, in some cases, to enrage us. It wants to move us. To touch us. Not accommodate us, make us comfortable." -- Jamake Highwater Toasty0.com My Grandkids

You greedy bastard!!!!! Michael Martin Australia "I controlled my laughter and simple said "No,I am very busy,so I can't write any code for you". The moment they heard this all the smiling face turned into a sad looking face and one of them farted. So i had to leave the place as soon as possible." - Mr.Prakash 24/04/2004

Hi, I have a simple question, has VS2005 actually made it all the way to retail yet? I mean, we can't afford an MSDN subscription, and I can't make it to one of the launch events (either too far away, or I can't get the time off from my brand new employer). I don't have any problems buying the Pro upgrade, but it doesn't appear to be actually out in the market. Anybody else seeing the same? Thanks, Nick This are my own opinions. You know the rest.....

Yes, it is shipping. I am in Las Vegas and just finished the Launch Event here. They passed out a copy of VS2005 and SQL Server 2005 to everyone attending. I don't know if it has made it into retail outlets yet, but it is shipping from MS and is posted on their MSDN site (posted on Monday I believe). There is a free version available there for download, but it's the VS2005 express. Great event they held here - lots of good information and hands on with VS2005. Did you purchase these? Or were they hand-outs, or downloaded? If so, where did you buy them. As I mentioned in the first post, I can't afford MSDN Subscriptions, I'm a single developer doing stuff on the side. MSDN Subs would wipe my entire profit for the year. I just started a new job so Launch Events are really out, not to mention the first one is over 2 hours away anyways..... Nick This are my own opinions. You know the rest.....

Karl, I'm looking for actual Pro Upgrade purchases. Express editions don't have what I need and I'm too far away from one of the launch events.... Nick This are my own opinions. You know the rest.....

Well, you gotta do what you gotta do...For me, missing a day's work for not one but two copies of VS2005 and SQLStadard are worth it. "Art doesn't want to be familiar. Pro IS NOT being given at the events. These are NOT express editions either. They are standard editions. "Art doesn't want to be familiar. It wants to astonish us. Not sure what event you attended, but here in Vegas, they gave away VS2005 PRO and SQL Server Standard. Karl - WK5M PP-ASEL-IA (N43CS) PGP Key: 0xDB02E193 PGP Key Fingerprint: 8F06 5A2E 2735 892B 821C 871A 0411 94EA DB02 E193

Then you were the only attendee to recieve such. You don't remember Harold explainng the reason in the TechNet session? "Art doesn't want to be familiar. It wants to astonish us. No, I wasn't the only one to receive the Pro version - everyone there did (about 2500 people I would guess. It was the full week event, so I don't know if that explains why because I saw someone else in another thread say he attended a one-day event and received the standard edition. MS was there with several of the development team members for the various products, and they stressed that the giveaways were full Pro versions of VS2005 and standard edition of Sql Server 2005. Sure enough, that is what is contained in the "Ready for Launch" boxes they handed out. Which location did you attend? You attended DevCon then? How much did that cost you? "Art doesn't want to be familiar. It wants to astonish us. Or, in some cases, to enrage us. Yes, I attended the DevCon launch event in Las Vegas. Registration cost was about $1300 (USD), but it was well worth it. Several MS people were present along with many other notables... Bjarne Stroustrup, Charles, Petzold, etc. Excellent sessions. They actually had four paths going at once: Visual Studio Connections, SqlServer Connections, C++ Connections, and ASP.Net Connections. Attendees were allowed to attend any of the sessions, no matter which Connections they registered for. My guess is about 2500 attended, and the give-aways were great - a Harley Davidson motorcycle, three IPOD Nano's, three passes for the next DevConnections, two XBOX-360's and much more. Great week, and lots of nice people to chat with. Karl - WK5M PP-ASEL-IA (N43CS) PGP Key: 0xDB02E193 PGP Key Fingerprint: 8F06 5A2E 2735 892B 821C 871A 0411 94EA DB02 E193
