what are your financial commitments like? i suspect a lot of people will lean towards look for a new job, certainly i do / would. the real question is, can you get by on less money? or do you have fixed expenses, like a mortgage that means you need to stay at the same salary level? zen is the art of being at one with the two'ness

It really depends on your monetary requirements. If you are the sort of guy who'd love to buy a BMW or keep upgrading your computer every month or do shopping without worrying about price-tags, you have to compromise on job satisfaction if you have a high-paying job. Of course if they treat you like a dog at work, it sure would suck, but if it's bearable and you need the money, keep the job. On the other hand, if you are financially stable, go for a satisfying job - it'd probably keep you a lot happier than you currently are.

A few months ago I was in a very well paid job that I absolutely hated (with a passion  ) When people asked why I put up with it, it was really because of the money! Also, I had been offered a large 5 figure bonus "if everything went well".. well I tried for months to make "things to go well" and they never did. I eventually plucked up the courage to quit, totally expecting to not find a job even near as well paid. I went over to contracting (thats short term work not growing smaller :p) I have never been happier, I earn more, im stressed far far less, and that "supposed" 5 figure bonus - I would have earnt twice in the 6 months after I left that company. Morale of the story... you can lambast in a job you hate or try to make things better. -- modified at 10:27 Friday 11th November, 2005

Back in high school I was extremely angry with a young lady. She was so incredibly smarter than I was, great at anything she tried. Her SAT and ACT scores were just below perfect on both math and english. She was smart enough to choose any career. And she chose clothing design when we parted ways. I don't recall if I told her, we were only friends not dating or anything. Still I was upset. I have since been in a miserable job. It was not worth it. However it also lacked money, I needed that job to get work experience for a career. I still felt the career choice was right. It was because of that miserable job that I did some first realizations about quality of life being a requirement. Two nasty marriages and divorces landed home the idea of quality of life being absolutely important. I actually returned to my 20 year to look for Stephanie, the lady I was upset with in high school, to apologize. I finally understood. What I tell most people now, I love my job, I hate the politics. If I could have another job, in the same career (3D computer graphics programming), that would give me the flexibility to constantly explore the limits of technology in an R&D atmosphere that did not have the politics, I would take it. I doubt such a job exists. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Talk about things of tomorrow and the mice in the ceiling laugh. (Japanese Proverb)

You are spending so much time at work, it should give back something. (a) What sucks? Can it be changed? (b) What do you NEED the money for? (c) start looking for a new job without quitting the old

Satisfaction is far more important than any other factor. Money is great, but unless you're in a situation where you absolutely must have every dime you can get in order to survive, it's not worth giving up satisfaction. And if you are in such a bind, the first priority of your life should be to eliminate the trap so that you can move on to something more satisfying. Start looking! In 10 years time, when you think back, which thought would you prefer to have: 1. Well, for the past 10 years I've been miserable, but at least I've earned a lot of money. 2. For the past 10 years I've been doing things that I like, I may not have much but I've been happy. I know which one I would prefer.
