I recently started getting into game programming under Windows. It took me a while to brush up my C++ and then move to VC++ and the Win32 API. Then I had to learn DX. And now I have no idea how to proceed. I'd like to order a couple of books to get dipper into game programming. I'm still staying away from 3D but I'd like to get a further look into game AI, 2D programming techniques (cool features etc.) and maybe something about game design. I found the following books in these catergories: 1. Game Design: The Art & Business of Creating Games by Bob Bates 2. Game Design: Theory and Practice by Richard Rouse 3. Isometric Game Programming With Directx 7.0 by Ernest Pazera, Andre Lamothe Anyone read one of these books? Got any others to suggest? Help me. Isaac Sasson wrote: 2. Game Design: Theory and Practice by Richard Rouse I've read this one. Nothing special. The interviews with the game creators such as Sid Meier and Will Wright are interesting. The sample design document is also good if you are interested in the design side more than the programming. Most of the tips are common sense stuff. Not a lot of coding examples in the book but there is a CD that I haven't investigated yet. Michael :-)

I found www.gamedev.net to be very helpful, not just with DX. - X

Yeah! Another DX programmer! In general, the BEST is Game Architechture and Design. A good 3D game engine one is Advanced 3D Game Programming in DirectX 7.0, just substitute the right DX8 stuff in. A good but outdated one is Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus. And GameDev.net is great
