Pre-snow snow

It's snowing here, but everyone here tells me this is not the real snow, so for lack of a better word I'll just call this pre-snow snow. It snowed yesterday too - looks nice, but it doesn't cover the ground - looks like it's melting before hitting the ground. I wish I had brought my camera :sigh:

I think what you see is the first 'snowflakes' of the season. If the snow is falling first time this season then it won't stick to the ground quickly. You can't make snow ball with the powder snow (or dry snow) and you can easily wipe it off on the cars. Chris should know about this one, as some ski resorts do have deep powder snow slopes. Accidents happend during the wet snow with all the slush on the ground. But you can make snow balls/snowman using wet snow. :rolleyes: Last but least is the ICE!!! (freezing rain on top of already snow which is already on the ground).. Try it to walk on it during Jan/Feb. :-D Also scrapping 2 inch thick ice on top of the car would be real fun ;)

I asked about that - nope, this is not sleet. It's snow - but real powdery snow. And since it's only about -2 C now, it's not cold enough to stay as snow on the ground. But all the cars have snow on their roofs and it's beautiful :-)

Yep, that's what this is. All the cars in the parking lot have snow on top :-) It's an awesome sight, really.

I came here for the snow damnit! :laugh: For me, a Minnesotan (which is in the utmost north US, bordered with Canada), it's funny hearing someone actually want snow. Well, besides my son who likes to build snowmen, snow hills, forts, and snow tunnels. :-) I really hate the bitter cold winters here. Nevermind the snow, which makes driving a hazzard. If I could, I would move to a tropical climate immediately. ;P

Nish, Patience, patience, patience. Remember... it is the middle of Fall. Still a month to go before winter starts. Can't remember anyone going through a Canadian winter and being disappointed about not seeing enough snow. JM

Nish, you're killing me i'm laughing so hard. This is even funnier than when Chris was describing his first winter here. These posts should be bookmarked, or put in your blog space. I'd like to see the transition in posts from "I wish I had brought my camera" to "I snowed again #%$#%#!%#!, I wish I was back home". ...cmk Save the whales - collect the whole set

You sound like a friend of mine. He's from Barcelona and moved to Scotland a few years ago. He loves the winter. His daughter just moved to Scotland too and she's really exited because the weather forcast said it is going to snow this weekend. Me, I'd rather move to Barcelona, its warm enough for palm trees there which means it doesn't get frosty.

No, no, no. I grew up in Michigan and hope I never see those winters or snow again. People in cold climates adore their summer, all 4 or 5 weeks of it.

Hey, this is getting interesting - it's hard to focus on my work. I just saw a lady spend 7-8 minutes wiping the snow off her car which was parked in the open parking lot :-D Good exercise for her - it was awesome, I've never seen this sort of thing before :-) And Smitha just went down to pick up some snow, she tried to bring it back to me, but it melted in the elevator (or so she said).

That's so funny. Having lived in many really snowy and ultra cold areas of Canada I just can't stop laughing when I read your snow posts. If it gets cold at all this winter in Toronto you will get to experience the various stages of coldness as well. At a certain temp you can feel the vapour in your nostrils freezing into your nose hairs. Very different feeling. At a colder temp you can start to hear the snow squeak when you walk on it. At a much colder temp that you probably won't experience in Toronto sound actually get's distorted because it's so cold. At -40 and below if you go for a walk outside cars going by sound all swooshy, it's hard to describe, but I think the air get's so dense that it affects the way things sound. If you want to make a cool picture to send back home, wait for a day when it's at least -15c and soak some clothes in water, wring them out, lay them flat outside until they freeze solid. A t-shirt frozen into a board makes a good picture for people with no concept of cold.

No way Nish. :-) The reason we actually move is because moving is expensive, you have to find new jobs, new schools, new house. That keeps us tied down despite our bitter cold winters. ;P
