Few weeks ago I asked for advise about winter tires. So eventually I installed some tires, second best brand (according to consumer report). Today was the first winter day in Toronto, and my impression of winter tires: Total crap , complete money waste. The 3 S's all where there: Skid, Spin, Slide. No difference between "all season" and winter tires whatsoever. In other words : guys, you can waste 500$ on something more useful.

You still need to learn how to drive in it. :) As with FWD vehicles, any expectation that tires will somehow make driving in snow and ice as easy as driving on warm, clear roads will just end up hurting you. Both can help in specific situations, but neither one is magic.

I do chains for when I drive into the mountains. I always think of my grandfather's actions up in the mountains that has grown legendary. Four four wheel drive vehicles stuck in the mud, my grandfather hauling a trailer with two wheel drive and chains, passed them, dropped us off at the trailer and returned to pull them out. Although the story now has him pulling a huge 5th wheel twice as long as the truck, and a motor practically bulging from his hood, reality was an average truck, average trailer and a good set of chains and about 40 years plus of knowledge of that valley. When I put on my chains, I can drive where I need to, and often pass the all season or winter tire crowd. it is important to know the limitation of any tire or add-on in snow. And it is important to know how wet or dry the snow is you are driving on. once a wheel tread is packed with wet snow, it is identical in function to a bald tire. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Actually, I think they make some difference. I'm not sure if they are not mandatory in some countries across Europe. For example, the chemical composition is different, so the special winter tires do not get "firm" in the cold weather (beneath 7 celsius ~ 45 fahrenheit). According to the tests, the winter tires will have worse performance on dry roads even at low temperatures, but even on a wet road, they will outperform the summer/all season tires at low temperatures, and it doesn't even have to be freezing cold. Here in northern Slovakia, the winter started during the last weekend (snow, ice, temperatures of around -15 celsius ~ 5 fahrenheit), and a coworker of mine had winter tires (2 or 3 years old) and said it was terrible when he compared them with another brand he drove on another car. So he went ahead and bought a new set, and says that even 2 different brands of them make a big difference. As for myself, I have only started to drive this year, after an 8-year break, so I can't really judge yet. :) I do have an old set of winter tires I bought with my car, and it seemed terrible to drive on the firm icy snow surface that was here on the roads the last weekend. But it may have something to do with the fact that these tires are more than 4 years old, even though they still have good pattern. To sum it all up - I personally do not have enough experience to judge this, but many of my friends who are experienced drivers say that the winter tires are a must. Rado

I still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the time David and I drove up to Quebec for some snowboarding. 1AM, -25C, the road covered in a few inches of compressed ice and snow, and he's screaming along a darkened road at 120km/h. cheers, Chris Maunder

With spiked wheels (WRC class), that speed under those circumstances, is cool. But I doubt David's got such tires on... Does he have a death wish? :) Before I switched to winter tires last week, I managed to skid a little. At much lower speed than 120 km/h. Less than 50 km/h! So naturally I figured it was time to switch. Well, guess what the weather's been like this week? Rainy at 7-8C. :sigh: -- Pictures[^] from my Japan trip.

If you were driving on ice, I don't care what kind of tires you had on, you are going to skid, spin, and slide. As far as I am concerned, snow tires are best on road surfaces that have wet snow. (non powdery ?sp?) Brett A. Whittington Application Developer
