I have to go for a song by Kevin Wilson: 'Hey Santa Claus you cunt, where's my fucking bike, I've unwrapped all this other junk and there's nothing that I like' 'I wrote you a fucking letter and came to see you twice, you worn out fucking wanker you forgot my fucking bike' 'Next time I come to see ya I'm gonna punch you in the guts, and let your fucking reindeer loose and kick Rudolph in the nuts' etc Excellent stuff, and truly, an icon in our time is Mr Wilson. An underrated classic. It's about time Wogan played it on Radio 2, don't you think...? ;P Anna :rose: Currently working mostly on: Visual Lint  Anna's Place | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up. It didn't work.

Nope, sorry, it wasn't at all obvious. If I'd known who the character was and what he represented I would have got it. Besides, it's true we all think the world ends at the Atlantic/Pacific/Mexican border. I don't count Canada cos it's America Lite. Am I taking this too seriously? Must leave nerd-mode. Must be normal...

Those songs are very reminiscent of my child hood, driving to Bovey to get the biggest tree they had, toboggoning on Dartmoor, drinking mulled wine (yes, we did drink wine as kids), my dad shooting decorations off the christmas tree with my air rifle, snowball fights in the house, ahh, such memories... And then my dads mood would change and the whole holliday would go to shit. But, there you go, thats what you get for being the progeny of a manic depressive who drinks too much. Nunc est bibendum

that song doesn't mention jesus even once. it would have you think Christmas is a time in which we celebrate icy precipitation and dangerous modes of transportation, completely ignoring the real reason for Christmas. it's Christmas-haters like you and Bing Crosby who've made the world into the utter hell it is today. i hope you're happy. I saw Motorhead open for Motley Crue last week, and my one regret was that they did not play this song, nor did they play anything off the follow up album ( Rock and Roll ). I can nearly quote the entire song. Goodness knows why it's called that, I think he got the name from a Woody Allen movie, and then wrote the rest regardless. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

That must have been quite something! I've never seen them live, but I'd love to sometime. :) The most memorable gig I ever saw (apart from a spoof band doing Wuthering Heights on helium balloons - I kid you not!) has got to be Queensryche at Donington in '91. Being in the middle of 70,000 people all shouting "Revolution!!" has got to be one of the freakiest feelings about... Anna :rose: Currently working mostly on: Visual Lint  Anna's Place | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up. But aren't you in the UK ? Although, Lemmy lives in LA now, doesn't he ? But I'm sure they are often advertising gigs in 'Classic Rock'. Yeah, it was awesome. The Motley show was a spectacle, but musically, Motorhead left them for dead.

When I went to the US, I JUST missed out on seeing Queensryche, and they do the full 'mindcrime' show nowadays, but seeing them in the day must have been awesome. I remember reading and dreaming about Donnington every year. Iron Maiden is top of my 'wish I could see' list, though

I think there was 20,000 of us shouting all sorts of stuff back at the Crue. The first song was 'shout at the devil', and it's been in my mind ever since. Everyone say through Motorhead, but as soon as Motley came out, the hands go up and everyone was screaming 'shout, shout'. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

What a shame, as almost everything you said in your post is true. It is a Christian holiday, and nobody else is required to play along. It's about the birth of a man who many believe to be God incarnate, who chose to take upon himself the sins of the world and carry them to his grave, so that the rest of us might be relieved of the burden of sin and have a new chance at eternal life. Bing and his ilk were not Christmas haters; they simply were talented songwriters who felt an outpouring of gratitude for the blessing they received from the Christ they chose to believe in, and elected to express it in the music they composed. I admire them for that. I'm no Christian, according to those who claim to know what God is thinking, but I still celebrate the season with thanks in my heart for the life and sacrifice of an historical character whose teachings shaped my value system. I hope that you, when you're not joking, enjoy a similar appreciation of the season, and have a very merry Christmas holiday in your own way.:-D "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

I'm no Christian, according to those who claim to know what God is thinking, but I still celebrate the season with thanks in my heart for the life and sacrifice of an historical character whose teachings shaped my value system. I hope that you, when you're not joking, enjoy a similar appreciation of the season, and have a very merry Christmas holiday in your own way.:-D "...a photo album is like Life, but flat and stuck to pages." - Shog9

actually, Christmas-time has been a secular winter festival of gift giving for as long as there's been a Christmas. Christians just happen to have invented a holiday that happens to happen at the same time - and they've been mad about the coincidence ever since. so much of what we call Christmas has nothing at all to do with Christ, isn't mentioned in the Bible and/or is directly related to pagan festivals that pre-date Christianity: trees, wreaths, Yule logs, snow, snowmen, sleighs, Santa, orgies of shopping and spending, fruit cake, mistletoe, etc., no mention of that in the Bible. and listen to the songs. off the top of my head : Winter Wonderland, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bell Rock, Frosty, Rudolph, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Silver Bells, White Christmas, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas, I'll Be Home For Christmas, Have A Holly Jolly Christmas, Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer, etc.. all classics, all part of "the Christmas season", all celebrating something other than the birth of Christ. it's no accident that so many of the popular songs celebrate something other than Jesus - many of the people are celebrating something other than Jesus, too. That would be great, provided the temperature was 35 Celsius and we had an outdoor swimming pool... ;P Anna :rose: Currently working mostly on: Visual Lint  Anna's Place | Tears and Laughter "Be yourself - not what others think you should be" - Marcia Graesch "Anna's just a sexy-looking lesbian tart" - A friend, trying to wind me up. I plump for "I'm dreaming of a white christmas" sung by Bing Crosby (1954). Okay, okay, I know that this thread is trivial and bound to cause peace and goodwill to spread like gravy on a hot turkey but surely it's better than yet another "my god is better than your god" argument, n'est pas? :rose:
