I decided to upgrade my wifes computer from a Pentium III 512MB RAM, 2 x 10GB HDD, DVD-ROM and CD-RW to an Athlon 1.2GHz with the 2 HDD exchanged for a Seagate 80GB HDD. The motherboards and CPU I had for the upgrade were second hand freebies. I first tried a PCChips 810LMR only to have it burn out and smoke the place out. Next I tried an MSI MS-6340 only to find that the pin out for the front panel did not match anything found in any manuals I found online. Couldn't get it to work. So I was left with a Gigabyte GA-7ZXE which seemed all good when I hit the power. Problem was no POST beeps and no signal to the monitor. Searched the web, read the manual and still no success. So it's back to the GA-6VXE+ Pentium III 733MHz with the same RAM and cards as I tried in the Athlon and it works a treat. So how did you spend your 4 day weekend? Michael Martin wrote: So how did you spend your 4 day weekend? Mine was only a 2-day weekend. I hauled my tractor to a mechanic to have it looked at. I then finished up the construction of a metal building for my father. I then helped hide eggs for my children/nieces/nephews. I then drove home and feasted on my favorite meal: pizza! Had I not done all of that, I would have been relaxing on my mower for a few hours!

Jeremy Falcon wrote: If you get nothing, zip, zilch then it's usually a major memory problem - either with RAM or on-board chips - or you have a CPU on crack. RAM is fine, I have tested it in several motherboards with no problems. As for onboards chips and the CPU, they're second hand so could be all kinds of crap. Jeremy Falcon wrote: Either way, the BIOS can't load into system memory and therefore won't run. Your best bet is to swap in and out parts with hardware you know to work to test it... Did that with all the parts I had spares of, didn't help. Jeremy Falcon wrote: ...and/or get a POST probe card if you have money to throw away. Wasting time with second hand parts explains why this idea has no chance of getting off the ground. Jeremy Falcon wrote: With a video problem, you should at least get a POST code. My thoughts as well. Jeremy Falcon wrote: And of course, there's the possibility that the wires were plugged in the wrong spot for the PC speaker. Did the the mobo get any power at all? Downloaded the manual from Gigabyte before plugging any cables in. They were in the correct spots. The motherboard LED's didn't light up but the CPU fan did power up and the HDD LED on the front panel was working. Yeah, not having the right equipment to test the hardware with can make it a PITA. Michael Martin wrote: The motherboard LED's didn't light up but the CPU fan did power up and the HDD LED on the front panel was working. Did you test your power supply? Fortunately, you can get a power supply tester for like $10. If your power supply is ok, then it sounds like something on the mobo is cooked because the LED on the mobo should light up even with no CPU at all - it only tests for an electric current. Oh man! Reminds of my 486 days when I did all the computer upgrades for my extended family (I was just beginning at HP at the time and was part of the IT department). By the time Pentiums came out, I was a software engineer and no longer mucking around inside dusty CPU boxes. But your story brought back some (apparently not enough) repressed memories :)

I planted a heap of veggie seeds and seedlings. I dug the holes and cemented in four pine posts to further divide the property for when the sheep give birth. I spent a day inside because of rain and did a lot of tidying around the house. I read two books. I authored several music DVD's. I collected firewood in the rain. I went to church. I went to a family dinner and ate a lot. I made lurve. I played guitar, and relearned a couple of Judas Priest songs I've not played in ages. I watched half a season of Married: with children. I hid easter eggs and expressed delight when my children found them. I think that's about all. Christian I have drunk the cool-aid and found it wan and bitter. - Chris Maunder
