Now that I've gotten your blood pumping, does anyone know how to use the Internet Connection Firewall without it mucking up your ability to use Windows file and printer sharing? What, do I have to choose between security and printing? I can't find instructions even on Microsoft's site or Google about this, but maybe I'm just too much of an idiot to do a correct search. Microsoft's instructions (the ones I've read) are written for dummies who need to enable ICF, and down at the bottom there's a word of caution that it screws up file and printer sharing. [EDIT] Turning off ICF is not currently an option, by the way. [/EDIT] Regards, Jeff Varszegi

There are probably ports you can enable to get Windows file/print sharing to work... but really, what's the point of running a firewall if you enable these services? It's like putting a deadbolt lock on the door, but leaving it open. For printing, there are many other (better) ways of printing besides Windows print sharing. You can get printers that have a network adapter and put them directly on the network, without having to go through the print server. There is also IPP - although I think it requires setting up IIS on the print server machine. You could (GASP) even set up the printers on a Unix/Linux box and use LPR ports. Might not be an ideal solution though. As for file sharing, an HTTP server or FTP server can be set up to accomplish that pretty easily. Sometimes I feel like I'm a USB printer in a parallel universe.

I'm not even asking for myself, but for someone else. I guess I pretty much agree with you. I never print anything-- my whole life is on my laptop (regularly backed up, of course). I'm going to get the printer set up on the network, and recommend people to create TCP/IP printer ports. Thanks for your input. Regards, Jeff Varszegi

Due to technical difficulties my previous signature, "I see dumb people" will be off until further notice. Too many people were thinking I was talking about them... :sigh:

I've never had this problem on my local network and I do have them both enabled along with zonealarm as a seconday firewall.
