Hey gyus, what HW you use? ( or need some HW recommendation)
-
Hello! I just considering buy some new HW and I'd like to know what HW you guys actually use (or what you recommend to buy). To be concrete, I thinking about buying new CD-Writer, graphics card and sound card. Most of time when I use computer I write code, while coding I often listen music (MP3, CD), I'm no big game player (I play just occasionaly, few hours per week, no 3D action stuff, I rather like classic adventures...) I rather to buy solid, reliable stuff, even if it isn't newest. Many thanks for any advice. SlavoF "I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand." --Confucius

For development my sytem is a: AMD TBird 1.33GHz 266MHz FSB 512M DDR-SDRAM GEFORCE 3 Sound Blaster Live! Value Cendyne 16x10x40 CD-RW Drive However, I recommend going with a good burner, I've had problems with the one I currently got, and would love to have trade it in for a name brander (might put it on eBay), SoundBlaster Live!Value cards are about $50 street price, highly recommended especially for MP3 playing. For graphics you don't need what I have ( I like to play games in between coding :-)) I would recommend the GeForce 2MX based cards, price range between $100-$200 for 32M RAM, I use to have the ELSA brand and their latest driver with Detonator integration was really stable. For CD drives, Plextor. They have many, many models and speeds, IDE and SCSI. For video cards, check out the Matrox G400/450 line. Matrox does awesome 2D, and you can't beat dual monitors when doing coding (especially UI - put VC on one monitor and the app on the other). I picked up an OEM G450 for about $80 a couple months ago from a local computer shop. --Mike-- http://home.inreach.com/mdunn/ "Make sure that if you are using a blow torch that you don't set anything on fire." -- Chris Maunder

I bought a CDRW from Iomega and it's worked great with Win2K - something that didn't happen with the Creative Labs MP3 board :( Cheers, Tom "Ya got lucky, ya lucky prick" - Keith McCready

Check the reseller's rating on Reseller Ratings and Gomez before making any buying decision. :) ;) ;P :-D  Farhan Noor Qureshi

Unfortunetly, Cendyne doesn't seem to appear in either one. After flaming their support board (which quite odd they took down the next day) I found out they just private label other brands. I think the burner I have is made by TEAC, but I don't know for sure :-( Sam C ---- Systems Manager Hospitality Marketing Associates

I have an Athlon 700, 640MB RAM, a Matrox G400 card ( dual head, 32MB ), and a Creative Vibra soundcard. I just bought a new burner - Diamond Data 32/12/8. Advice: 1/ Buy LOTS of RAM. You can't have too much and it's cheap as chips currently 2/ Buy a dual head card if at all possible. It is SO helpful to have a second monitor running MSDN. Or even Winamp.... 3/ Buy the cheapest Soundblaster card you can ( also cheap ). It will sound the same as the dearer one and won't give you any hassles. 4/ Buy an AMD processor. AMD is faster, cheaper and are yet to release a processor that cannot do simple math if you put the wrong numbers in. I'll put here also that my Diamond Data works great - that is why I bought it. My Phillips did not work under Win 2000 and not one of my emails asking about support was even answered. If a vendor does not exist in Gomez and/or Reseller ratings then it should be enough to smell something fishy. :) ;) ;P :-D  Farhan Noor Qureshi

I'd go for a Plextor CD writer... They're the best in terms of quality and speed I've seen. Cheers, Peter

I'm running Win2K and... 1) I have a 4-year-old Panasonic SCSI CD-R drive. It works fine after flashing with a newer ROM image. 2) My Adaptec 2940 Ultra is 5 years old and still works great. 3) I have an ATI Radeon 64 DDR for video (because I also use this system to play a few games). The quality of the 2D text is outstanding on a decent monitor. (6 months old) 4) I'm running an AMD 1ghz T-bird with 256mb of RAM on an ABIT KT-7 motherboard. (6 months old) 5) I have a SB Live (3 years old?), but if you're gonna play games, you might want to consider the Hercules sound card (can't recall exact model name), especially if you have a newer VIA chipset motherboard.
