Those who frequent the Operating Systems forum may remember me trying to figure out a way to avoid losing all my emails when I reinstall Win2K Server. I had experienced the problem in previous versions, and had already lost a bunch in the last installation, so I had planned to export them all before commencing with brain surgery again. It turns out that you can export adresses to a file, but not emails, and I agonized over ways to get around this. It turns out to be simple. I haven't noticed this after reinstalling previous versions of Windows, but in Win2K Server if you reinstall, it doesn't wipe out any previously existing Admin folders in Documents and Settings, even though it does destroy any program you had installed. Since OE6 lacks the necessary Export capabilities, I didn't think to look in the Import menu until tonight. Lo and behold, there it is - Import from another OE6 data store. Hehehe, a few clicks later I found my old email installation in the old Admin folder and had them all back again. Duplicate .dbx file names weren't a problem eother; it just merged them all nicely. Since no one came up with a viable solution to the problem I posed before, I thought I'd pass this obvious-in-retrospect solution to the Lounge... I hope it comes in handy for someone.:-D Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Backing up emails from Outlook Express is a pain, but can be done easily once you know how Open up outlook express, select the inbox, and bring up its properties. In the dialog that opens, it will tell you the full path of the OE datastore, go to that folder, and copy the entire folder (after closing OE :) ) to a safe dir for the re-install Export your address book (why can you export an address book but not your mail???) Once you have re-installed you can then bring your mail back using the import from OE data store as you have found BTW, for various versions of OE you have to grab different folders - ie, for OE6, just the folder the mailboxes are in is fine, for other versions you have to grab a few folders higher *sigh* If all else fails and you can't get OE to get your mail, install eudora, tel lit to import the mailstore you have backed up, then get OE to import from eudora As you might have guessed, I have dealt with this problem a lot :(

I use a batch file (with the WinZip command line add-on) to zip up all mail and address book files. It runs as part of the nightly backup, so provided I leave the machine on I always have a backup that's no more than a day old. I then just re-import them after reinstalling. I'm sure I've mentioned this before here. What about my effort here[^]. It's a bit of a rambling explanation, but an explanation none the less. It was helpful, Michael, but more work than I wanted to do. It's also unclear whether merely copying the files to the default directory would cause OE to rebuild the database. As I had several files of the same name, the merging of emails in like-named folders would not have been simple, either. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

:laugh::laugh: The help (and condolences) was much appreciated, but to no avail. The ashtray has definitely relocated permanently, though I have no idea how it was accomplished.:sigh: Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

Damn. I know it seems obsessive, but geez. Relocated, yes - but I can't bring myself to believe it has been quantum paired with Schrodingers butter pot and is now floating flotsam in the general vicinity of star sector WT748392 of Galaxy 5, Universe 7. Besides - the search is informative in itself - did you know that several classes of Boeing passenger jets are allowed to fly for up to 3 whole days with one lavatory ashtray missing?
