I'm sure you know that doing lots of varied excercises increases total body health, strenght, stamina, etc. Pushups build chest muscles, chest muscles allow you to push things. Also, the formal PT sessions teach everyone to do thinkgs as a group that they would never consider doing on their own (ie follow an order to drop down on the ground and do pushups when it is 5:30 in the morning and below freezing outside). I'm sure you can imagine how well an army would fight if it was made up of a bunch of people who never excercised and got up when they wanted to. Was your service compulsory? If so, would you have ever considered serving if it weren't and how does the average person view compulsory service there?

Yeah, but seriously; we had scheduled exercises which included weight lifting and running. Exercise which was organized and felt to have a purpose. Forcing us down on the floor in the morning is just silly. Counting up 39, and backwards to 20 and up to 50, (after being promised to just do 50 push ups, sit ups and jump ups), is just horrible. The only reason they did that was that a) their penises are very small and b) they had to do it when they joined the army. It's not about making us into better soldiers, it's about showing who's got power (and the smallest penis). I don't trust or respect power tripping freaks. Terry O`Nolley wrote: Was your service compulsory? Yep. First time around I got out of it because I was beginning university studies. I figured they'd let me go the next year as well. Was I wrong or what? So I asked the recruiting officer (I don't know if "recruiting officer" is a correct term when talking about compulsory service) if I could get a short and easy service. I was set on studying and not playing the hi-tech version of paint ball for a whole year. If there actually was a military threat to Sweden and the pay was good, sure I'd consider it. Hell, I'd have easy access to weapons (I'm a gun freak - the good kind though ;)), and I'd have all the time in the world to exercise - I like exercising (with a purpose). What the rest of the population thinks is beyond me. I know though that there have been propositions about building a professional army instead of a compulsory one. Many booed but many cheered. It's hard to say really what the public opinion is. I do know that the military is a huge cost right now, and the state cuts their budget every 3 years or so. Since the fall of Soviet, the military's budget has probably been cut by 30%. There is however being money diverted (almost secretly) to anti-terrorist groups. I think, but I'm not sure, that it's a joint thing between the military and police. I know people who are in such a group, and I know they do target practice with various weapons at the firing range I normally go to when I want to p
