We have to be careful with the new worm "Sasser". It's devastating too many computers here in Europe. Please don't open strange e-mails and don't download things that you don't want to or from strange web sites. Thanks for not harming the world.... Virus programs sucks...

Personally I've not see it yet. Just can't understand why people don't patch there machines at home, and as for work, well, do the companies that get caught out not use firewalls? Afterall, it was a port based attack, not some attachment on an e-mail. I remember at the last place I worked (+50,000 people) that the patch managment was awful. The network support staff were not even aware of the patches needed. The machines were NT4 pacthed to SP6, and nothing else, so there were about 3-4 years out of date. When they got hit with one virus (last year) it took down 2 regional data centers, but somehow it never got into the press. Only way it got past the firewall, was because of a consultant connecting his infected laptop onto the network. But it would not have been a problem if they had applied the patch that had been out for 9 months before. I know for a fact that they are in the same situation today. Stupid people never learn.

Besides, Windows Update alerts come on the same place and fashion than highly important messages, like, "There are unused icons on your desktop". Yes, and their unprotected sales people notebooks connect through a VPN, effectively creating a bridge between the Internet and their internal network. People need to understand that a firewall is not a security tool, it's a network isolation tool. Every time I see a firewall claimed as a security tool, it seems just as wrong as claiming SQL Server as a money-making tool. Due to technical difficulties my previous signature, "I see dumb people" will be off until further notice. Too many people were thinking I was talking about them... :sigh:

Please don't open strange e-mails People should do their research before offering warnings and advice to other people, especially about important and critical things like major security flaws. It is not transmitted by strange emails, or even familiar ones. Better advice would be: Please patch holes in your OS; but those who haven't already probably won't do it just because they read it in the Lounge. And when you connect in on VPN, you could not access the whole network, it was very controled. It was one of the few things they did do correctly.
