Deadly Computer [^] First I gave up smoking to extend my life. Next came giving up my consumption of alcohol. Now I'm faced with another choice. Give up the PC or chance dying. OK Made up my mind. I'm just going to have to cut my life a little shorter. Yes, I program in VB, but only to feed my addiction to a warm place to sleep and food to eat!

You'll die of worrying about what's going to kill you a lot sooner than anything else can get you.;P Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

The survey, released Thursday by Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition, Computer TakeBack Campaign and Clean Production Action I got about that far. Where on earth do these groups come from?

Yet another article that misstates science in the lead in; related chemicals in the dust have been shown to cause neurological damage in rats in a laboratory. Halfway through the article you finally find the disclaimer: "Scientists have not directly correlated exposure to PBDEs with specific diseases or developmental impairment." It then adds that scientists are studying possible links but "results are years away." This should really read; "results the activists want to see are years away" since all the studies to date, and there have been hundreds if not thousands, haven't found any such links. Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what's good for people than people do is a swine. - P.J. O'Rourke

In reality... more computer users are going to die from obesity-related problems from sitting around too much and not getting enough exerciese. But that being said... I still can't believe that chemicals are used with such frequency, and it's rare that anyone considers the consequences. I'm mostly worried about what Trollslayer said - computers, cell phones, etc. are eventually going to wind up in landfills, and chemicals will be leached into who knows what. Would it be too much to ask that when something - anything - is designed, it should be made from components that are either easily recyclable, or safely biodegradable? Give up the PC or chance dying. I am of the opinion that one does not really live any longer by giving up the things that he/she loves. It only seems that way. Besides we are aiming at a certain quality of life as opposed to a quantity. If one is really serious about this long life craze he /she would do well to study the latest research on starvation/calorie restriction as it pertains to life extension in mammals. It seems that restricting caloric intake to about 1000 - 1200 calories/day increases the lifespan by about 50% and at the same time protects against aging and some diseases attached to the aging process. Downside is 0 sex drive - look like a starving begger - but you will live a while longer - but you may not want too. Richard "He who joyfully marches in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice. --Albert Einstein
