Problem with IE5.00

A few weeks back something happened to IE5 and I can no longer download .EXEs. Either I get a display with a picture of a piece of film in it and the file downloads to somewhere unknown and I can't find it (using Explorer|Search) or I get a message box with "Error Locating Object Handler" and text complaining about "application/octet-stream" and no viewer available. I think this happened after I installed a Wise Installer Upgrade over the Web. My guess is something is screwed in the Registry but what. I've installed IE5 SP2 and it made no difference. I've also Reset IEs Advanced Internet Options all to no avail. I can't see any way of uninstalling IE on my W2K machine. This is driving me nuts - help:confused: Neville Franks, Author of ED for Windows. Version 4.01 just released, with a C++ Class View that actually works. www.getsoft.com
I had a very similar sounding problem on my home server running W2K Advanced Server and IE5. I finally bit the bullet and upgraded to IE 5.5 SP2 and the problem seems to have resolved itself. Can't tell you how my machine get messed up, but I can tell you it wasn't due to any Wise Installer Upgrade. My server machine at home is stripped to the bone, W2K advanced server, IIS, Merak Mail Server and Simple DNS Plus ... there is nothing else running on the machine and I hardly ever log in to the thing! Look in the registry under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects if you have something listed there it might be the problem. That's one way to hook into IE and control what happens when you click on a link. I would back that key up, remove the CLSID's and then restart IE. You could also make sure the handlers for file, ftp, and http have the same CLSID value under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Handler if they don't then something might have installed a custom handler which is affecting your downloading. There are a few more things to look at but see what those turn up first.

this is not what you wanted but maybe it helps you if you need to get any file and you have problem with web client you can send mail to f.e. binky@junoaccmail.org with URL path-to-file into mail body you will get it by mail t!

Hi Alex, You might want to give ED a try and check out the class view for yourself. It would be great to get some feedback from CP users on this, which of course is just one of the many great features in ED. Another crazy idea ... do you have IIS on your machine? If so, do a search for a program named "root.exe" if you find it you got nailed with than damn code red worm. I forgot to reapply the hotfix after installing IE 5.5 and wouldn't you know it, in a matter of moments I got infected with the worm. Microsoft has a cleaner application that get's rid of the program and looks for other possible damage that it may have caused. The worm royally messes up your machine, my root web pages wouldn't show up the first time I went to the url on my server and things like that. Of course it eats up your bandwidth trying to infect other machines and things like that as well. Might be worth investigating? Good Luck! Jon

Mine is worst.... If you go to a web page, it's take long time then displays content with broken images (x sign). Then if reload or try to follow some links I am getting "Page can't be displayed" and then IE become useless! I found couple of Knowledge base articles on this topic and giving tons of solution! Tried some and sick of trying all "possible" solutions. So if any one have any working solution please let me know. :mad: :confused: :mad:

I don't have an entry for: Check HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter\application/octet-stream either on W2K or a W98 box. The only thing I can find that refers to octet is: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\OctetList\Clsid default = {1241400f-4680-11d1-a3b4-00c04fb950dc} Renaming this key didn't make any difference that I could see. If you look under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe you should see Content Type = application/x-msdownload then look in Filters for application/x-msdownload \application/x-msdownload CLSID = {1E66F26B-79EE-11D2-8710-00C04F79ED0D} which for me is the same as application/octect-stream. Are you only having problems downloading exe's? What happens when you right click on a file link and choose Save As? Does the same thing happen when you right click on an image and choose Save As?

There are so many ways to f-up IE. There's also HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\MIME and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts good luck
